Old Bridge Township, New Jersey — On April 24, 2023, Old Bridge Police responded to a 911 call regarding a dispute at approximately 3:09 p.m. at a residence on Woodland Avenue in Laurence Harbor. Officer Christopher Hammel was met at the door by an unidentified woman, who told them 26-year-old Luke Mendez was upstairs. The footage reveals at least two other individuals inside the house, and they begin debating whether the woman was justified in placing cameras inside the property. According to one of the other residents, the woman was “threatening Mendez with the cops.” During the 911 call, The woman can be heard telling officers that she wants him out of the house.

The officer approaches the steps and shouts out for Mendez, who appears at the top of the stairway wielding a large knife. When officer Hammel instructs him to put it down and when he does not, the officer pulls out his gun and tells him to “relax.” Officer Hammel asks Mendez why he is upset, but he does not respond. The officer continues to try to persuade Mendez to drop the knife for nearly two minutes before Mendez runs down the stairs with the knife. As Mendez descended a staircase while holding the knife, Officer Hammel fires his service weapon three times, striking Mendez. Officer Hammel removes the knife from Mendez, calls backup and medics, and is seen placing his hands on the gunshot wounds. Mendez was transported to Old Bridge Medical Center and was pronounced deceased at 4:47 p.m.

  1. What an amazing cop. Empathetic, calm, genuine. Excellent verbal deescalation skills, unfortunately the other party also gets a vote in the matter and I’m sorry it ended this way. That cop is a good man.

  2. Wow. Officer Hammel is brilliant at his job! He arrives on scene, handles everyone and everything all going on at once. Once he's face to face with the knife guy, he becomes a master negotiator. He's repeating important simple commands, requests, assurances, in repetition so the guy can have all these opportunities to get calm, to talk. Unfortunately, the guy is mentally and emotionally locked into focus on what he believes he has to do. That means he isn't able to comprehend everything going on and being said.
He bolts toward the officer and officer has absolutely no choice but to neutralize the threat, and fires his weapon.
What seemed very odd, different, to me, is that the man never went limp. Everything on him froze solid – his head, body, limbs – everything looked like he was frozen solid.

  3. Dear internet cops… put on the badge and get some actual experience in situations like this. Even just working DOC[department of corrections]. O/C, batons, and tasers often do not work. And bean bag rounds from a shotgun often make situations like these worse. Adrenaline plus mental illness means a lack of effectiveness when it comes to pain compliance. That means, that taser usage will rsult in you getting stabbed multiple times and placed in a box carried by six yourself. More to life than judging fields of work that you clearly know absolutely nothing about. Go through the academies, get the experiences, then come back after being in these situations first hand yourself. Public servent yes, but that does not mean that we are going to throw away our lives for an unavoidable conflict when our communities dont even value us. Internet cops hate actual law enforcement so much until they need us. If you dont have the experience, dont speak on it. Because the fantasies you make in your head and the crap you see on tv is not realistic.

  4. yeah, dont use a taser or anything. Wouldn't wanna make your job even slightly hard. Tasers, bean bag guns, we just dont use any of those things when there is plenty of time to do so. Being a cop sure is easy.
