Cyclone Biparjoy, classified as a very severe cyclonic storm, will cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Gujarat’s Jakhau Port today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest weather bulletin. More than 74,000 people living near the Gujarat coast have been shifted to safer places as a precaution and the state administration has deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures. With the cyclone barrelling towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, the Met department said. An alert for rainfall has also been sounded for Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka and UTs. The Indian Coast Guard has positioned ships, relief teams and helicopters for rapid humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations in Gujarat. A total of 33 teams have been earmarked by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to undertake relief and rescue operations in Gujarat and Maharashtra ahead of the expected landfall of cyclone Biparjoy.
