My great uncle, Basil Palkovich, was one of those D-Day heroes. He was over 6 feet tall but his best friend was not. When they jumped off the landing craft, his friend plunged into water that was over his head and the weight of his gear pulled him under. Basil grabbed him and carried him so his head was above water until they reached the beach. Basil survived the invasion. After the war, he saved another friend from anaphylactic shock from a bee sting. He spent his last days living with us near Chicago. He was a good man.
