A violent storm has struck the Swiss canton of Schwyz in Zurich, causing widespread damage and disruption. At least 15 people have been injured, with five of them being transported to hospital for treatment.
According to the local authorities, over 200 trees have been brought down by the strong winds, causing power cuts to thousands of homes in the region. Mayor of Schwyz, Thomas Staubli, has declared a state of emergency and urged residents to stay indoors for their own safety.
In response to the situation, the Swiss army has deployed over 100 troops to assist with the cleanup and support the efforts of local rescue teams. The country’s Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Relief has also sent a team of experts to help coordinate the response.
Minister of the Interior, Alain Berset, praised the quick response of the emergency services and expressed his solidarity with those affected by the storm. He said, ‘The safety of our citizens is our top priority and we will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that everyone is receiving the help they need.’
This storm is the latest in a series of severe weather events that have hit Switzerland in recent months, causing widespread damage and disruption across the country. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for further storms in the coming days.”
