Battered by rain since Friday, Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city of 1.6 million people, remained under a state of emergency on Sunday. The nation’s weather forecaster, MetService, warned of more severe weather on Sunday and Monday for the North Island. Intense rainfall could also cause surface and flash flooding, it said.

The focus of the emergency has since moved south, with Waitomo District – located about 220km (137 miles) from Auckland – declaring a state of emergency late on Saturday.

    在旧中国到处可见为地方官吏歌功颂德的所谓“德政碑”。民国三十六年,四川温江崇庆一带大旱,百姓农田,颗粒无收。时新任县长叶春杰,勾结商号,谋取暴利,并枪杀无辜。后天降暴雨,淹没农田二十万亩,淹死民众千余人。叶春杰又趁火打劫,鲸吞赈济黄谷三千多石。对此,老百姓是敢怒不敢言。

    忽然有一天,在崇庆与温江两县的养马场,竖起一块引人注目的“劣政碑”。碑中刻有三个醒目的大字:“劣政碑”右上方刻了三个小方块:口口口。左右配以对联:

    早去三朝天有眼;

    迟走几日地无皮。

    横批四个字:“民之继母”

    崇庆解放,叶春杰从成都被押回,伏法于天庆寺侧。

  6. The Floods have nothing to do with Climate Change. They are 1 in 100 year events. But also, it is worth pointing out how in New Zealand, Local Councils have become lax at cleaning out drains and doing basic maintenance. How there is major stormwater wors that need doing. Also, worth noting how in areas such as Auckland, the Local Council and the Government are guilty of allowing and in some places, forcing high density subdivisions into areas with infrastructure that was built only to cater for small low density population. Oakley Creek/Unitec site is one such superb example of excessive high density in a low density area. Cram thousands of dog box kennel houses, into an eco sensitive area. Finally, and you have to ask the question. When many developments have occurred, did not that have to take into account effective drainage systems?

  7. no idea why people build on the edges of cliffs like that and then are surpised when they lose their house. also who on earth organised the train to travel without having maintance crews a section ahead checking the tracks when their is obviusly a flooding and damage risk.
