Christmas tree recycling has created a “novel” post-festive delight for the residents of a zoo in Essex.

About 200 trees, donated by local businesses, have been introduced as part of an enrichment programme at Colchester Zoo for many species including elephants, meerkats and chimpanzees.

“The animals really enjoy the Christmas trees,” zoo spokeswoman Laura Lamb said.

Food is hidden in the trees to encourage foraging and play.

  1. β€œNow when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me." – Luke 18:22

  2. That Zoo looks more like a prison for animals. In the wild those elephants would walk for many many miles each day but in here they walk 10 feet and hit a wall and have some silly humans feeding them by hand. Exploitation at it's finest

  3. Still a prison now u throw em human trash n insult their intelligence by sayin they love it just cuz they search for the food smh..I've seen ppl dig into dumpster from desperation so I don't see why a hungry animal wouldn't accept any food given the chance..zoos are disgusting

  4. When will we stop this animal slavery ..10000 years of slavery never ending …all those poor creatures in those cages they all belong in the wild, those trees belong in the ground.. enough of this pagan holiday !Jesus doesn't care about trees ,corporate America does
