Most of you probably already know that it seems like El Ninio is on its way, and at this point, you might be asking why you should be concerned about it. In the end, why should it even matter if the tropical Pacific Ocean gets warmer than the norm? That is a significant distance from the United States that is considered to be continental. As it turns out, El Ninio is often the cause of variations in the patterns of precipitation and temperature across a great deal of the world, including in North America.
The severe storms, flooding, and landslides that struck California in 1982–1983 and again in 1997–1998 are likely to still be fresh in the memories of a great number of people. If we knew for sure that El Nio would bring such heavy rainfall, it could be somewhat of a comfort for the region, which is currently through a catastrophic drought. But those two episodes were the two strongest El Ninos in the past 60 years, and we’ve seen many more El Nio years in which California didn’t experience those types of severe repercussions at all. In the event that El Nio materializes, what kinds of weather may we anticipate across the United States, and when should we anticipate it?
