It comes as no surprise that driving during winter takes a honed set of skills. Many people can barely manage in their personal cars let alone an 18 wheeler. Even fewer have the mental capacity to comprehend the difference between life or death or have the ability to transfer that into time.
Take for instance my near death experience which occoured today in Washington State. As I was heading south on Selards road another trucker was heading west on Travis rd. Selards, being a main highway has no stop sign while the east west traffic does.
Approaching the intersection from the south the traffic coming from the west is obscured by a large Gravel pile which can be seen on the video. As I approached the intersection, I quickly realize this other trucker isn’t slowing
I had a choice in this instance, do I speed up or do I try to slow. Being 80,000lbs I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to stop. I also knew that an accident was certain and that there was no way to avoid it…to speed up or slow down…is the question that will live with me the rest of my life..
Most people dont think about judging their lives by the amount of time they have been alive or how long it will take to die. We humans like to judge it by our accomplishments or the familes we raised. We rarely ever put it into the context of time or how long a short of time it will take to die.
In the video above, that difference is 1 second…a split second decision on my part saved not just my life but the life of another trucker. Think about it in the context of how far a truck travels at 55mph. A vehicle traveling at 55mph will travel 80ft. A trucks overall length from tip to tail is about 70ft long and can vary. Had I been 1 second slower the impact would have been the front of and not the rear of the truck.
