Until There Are None | Dog Rescue Documentary
Spread The Viralist

This documentary follows a group of animal rescue volunteers as they travel to overcrowded rural animal shelters in West Virginia and Kentucky to rescue dogs before they are euthanized.

NOTES:
This film was born in 2007 when after doing my first few segments as a freelancer for Classroom Close-up, NJ, I started looking for an independent project I could tackle on my own. I had recalled seeing this page about Marianne’s “Pet Projects” on her website (http://www.amp-your-biz.com/pet.html ) and thought there might be an interesting story to tell in the world of dog rescue. It was certainly a new world to me, I’d never even owned a dog. Marianne and I ran the idea around a bit, pitched it to Rogers’ Rescues (http://www.rogersrescues.com), and in a few weeks I was shooting the first tapes of b-roll at a pet adoption event in PA.

Most of the additional shooting happened that same fall including the Shelter Run segment where I was able to travel along on a three day dog transport. Due to scheduling and project conflicts it ended up taking almost a year to get some sit down interviews done with the gang from Rogers. Other than some small pickups and b-roll shots, shooting completed in the fall of 2008. The first rough cut was finished in early 2009. Then, it spent another year being polished, reviewed, and sitting on the shelf while paying projects took priority. It started to take final shape early this year and Marianne was actually able to show the rough cut to some rescue folks at a football party and get some feedback. Finally, six months later, the version you see here debuted online.

The full “making of” story about this film is chronicled on my blog: http://tinyurl.com/8t8khcr

Filming for this project took place in NJ, PA, MD, WV, and KY. The majority of footage was captured using a Sony PDX10 shooting in DVCAM mode. During the Shelter Run I also used a pocket-sized Canon HV10 shooting in HDV mode. In total, we recorded about 15 hours of footage and interviews to make the twenty minute film. Post-production was done in Avid Media Composer and the soundtrack was scored using SonicFire Pro.

  2. I am very proud to have your organization to be able to rescuing all these animals. Your organization is the best and thank you so much for spending so many hours every day and night.

  3. The conservative, over-religious and under-educated rural south (such as WV and Kentucky, featured in the film) are responsible for the vast majority of the pet overpopulation problem in this country. Its where most puppy mills are, most don't spay/neuter… they simply dump unwanted animals.
No big surprise, since these same people tend to be against birth control for humans as well, boasting the highest rates of teen pregnancy and STDs. (Hint: this is what happens when you offer 'abstinence only' instead of ACTUAL sex-EDUCATION. These states work to defund planned parenthood, when they are the ones who need it the MOST)
This conservative mindset and lack of empathy is why they send so many dogs to us in the northeast to be adopted by RESPONSIBLE people who will actually spay, neuter and care for them. (The bible belt has the highest rates of child death due to abuse/neglect, so why would we think they would treat their dogs any better than their kids? But remember, birth control makes Baby Jesus cry)
This is just another example of what pisses me off about the conservative south.
Unlike the liberal northeast and west coast, these conservative states are a net drain on the economy, taking in more federal spending than they pay out in federal taxes. (All while complaining that the government spends too much, lol)
The liberal states pick up the slack for the irresponsibility of the conservative states in every way imaginable, yet, thanks to the electoral college, a voter in a rural conservative area has more voting power than a liberal voter in a metropolitan area. This makes no sense to me.
It is not that I feel that MY vote should count more than someone else's, but why should voters in the leech states have a bigger voice than those living in the states that are carrying them? It should be equal: one person = one vote.

Sorry to get all political on a dog rescue vid, but it is Trump's inauguration day and I am in rare form.

And I DO realize that not ALL southerners are under-educated, over-breeding, gun-loving, bible-thumping, dog-dumping, child-abusing, Trump-voting rednecks (Bless their hearts), but statistics don't lie:

That said,  I feel really bad for those southerners who actually have a decent head on their shoulders (I know they are out there), since they spend their lives surrounded by complete ignorance and insanity.

Great job, Roger's rescue, and kudos to ALL who help the dogs, no matter what state you are from or who you voted for.

  4. If adoption shelters would lower the prices to adopt , that would help with over population in the shelters . Many people would love a pet , but can't afford the outrageous fee !!  It's almost like someone not being able to take care of their own pet & say Well I fed it for  X number of years I want X amount of money . Then if no one wants it have it  put it to sleep ??? So many  more animals would be saved , the shelters wouldn't be over crowed or crying cause they have no room , money to keep them !!!

  5. You want a exact breed with pedigree, which you can raise from puppy? Go
    to certified AKC breeder.
You dont care about breed and so on? Adopt from shelter.

Theory that buing a dog from breeder "steals" place for shelter dog is
greatly misguided. Works only for puppy mills or some shady backyard
breeders who does it just for money. By logic, if you want a pedigree
dog, you would never go for some mongrel from shelter. Pedigree dogs
    dont steal anything.

  6. We just adopted our 4th puppy 3 weeks ago. She came from a horrible place, she had many internal parasites. One which she apparently got from nasty infected water. Horrible to think anyone can do something so cruel to a helpless puppy/dog. Wether she was dumped, or her mother was dumped we don't know. Needless to say she's now living the good life with 3 other rescue dogs 🙂

  7. Makes one more frustrated watching those poor creatures asking for help and deliverance. There are just too much unwanted dogs for those who need them as pets.  When you think of some people, mainly millionaires and others too wrapped up in themselves to care about other God`s creatures makes one feel more.

  8. I would like to work at a animal shelter when I'm older and I have a question maybe you guys could answer it since you may have worked at a animal shelter or volunteered. I would just like to ask if volunteering at a animal shelter is hard? I'm not sure how many people volunteer but I don't just want to volunteer I want to have it as a full time job when I'm older. If anyone has had experience with animal shelters could you maybe give me some advice on what is expected of you?. I have wanted to work with animals from a very young age and I don't think I'm changing my mind

  9. ONE GOOD WAY TO FIX UNNECESSARY KILLING OF ANIMALS……. SPAY AND NEUTER DOGS…. AND ADOPT……. BE KIND AND STOP THE SADNESS

  10. To get more animals adopted & stop animals being turned in at shelters:

Regarding Pet Rent & Pet Fees in Rentals:

This is clear discrimination.  Smokers "always" cause damage & need carpet/padding replaced, walls/ceilings re-painted w/many extra coats/kilz, appliances replaced, vents cleaned, etc. in attempts to get smoke out.  Costs are astronomical, as stated by the many utube videos done by apartment managers – check:  costs of smoking apartments.

There is no "smokers" rent, or non-refundable deposits & they are never charged a dime for the damage they always cause.  College students & children commonly cause damage, &, there is no "college student/children" rent/fees.

Pets do NOT always cause damage.  I've been doing animal behavior problem solving almost 30 years.  Yes, you will get some irresponsible tenants with their animals, but, no more than average tenants who are irresponsible & cause damage, &, definitely have NEVER caused as much damage as any smoker.

Smokers are never turned away, &, pets usually are turned away, &, limited in how many, what size, breed restriction, etc.

No pet has ever caused a risk like a smoker does of fire – life threat to the whole community & building damage.

Hopefully, these discriminatory practices will soon be outlawed, &, people will be able to go back to rentals for refunds for the years they've lived there.

In addition, renters mostly do NOT want carpet for allergy purposes, animals & any bug issues.  Carpets are toxic.  Many people travel regularly & stay in hotels which can have bed bugs.  You cannot screen people for this, but, at least if you switch to flooring throughout (tile, non-toxic linoleum, concrete, even laminate, etc.), it will not only be healthier, easier on people w/animals, but, enormously easier to prevent, get rid of bed, or other bugs.

Please focus on offering healthy rentals without carpet (or, at least offering non-carpet for those who desire).  Your expenses will be enormously lower (not replacing carpet every year, or paying for carpet cleaning, &, your renters expenses & health will be greatly improved.

Taxes are extremely high due to Pet Rent & Pet Fees.  This is keeping people from adopting at shelters because they cannot afford the pet rent & fees.  People who adopt from shelters are lowering our taxes.  Costs to run Animal Control in every city in the U.S. include:  buildings, utilities, equipment, kennels, land, employees, supplies, veterinarians, etc. due to excessive animals & not enough homes for them.  People who adopt from shelters should actually have "reduced" rent since they are saving our country enormously on taxes.

  11. Our Creator made covenant with all of His prophets and commanded us all to pay 10% of our income to needy relatives, fatherless children, homeless, hungry and deprived people. That means you have already took care of our 1 million homeless relatives sleeping in the streets, 50 million hungry relatives waiting for their next meal, 19 million fatherless children, and 17 million children going to school without breakfast and now you are taking care of His other creatures! . . . Remember you can never ever escape from our Creator, as long as you live. Happiness is submission to the laws of our land Lord.

  12. Shelters CAN become No-Kill. It begins with the Shelter Director, a commitment. And it trickles on down. Thank God for those Directors, and their staff. Thank God for Adopters, Rescue Groups, Fosters. And those that can volunteer for such, donate to help.

  13. I wish all shelters had it in their budgets to implement sound systems in addition to all needed supplies. Music makes a huge difference in anxiety levels. I hope all humans can learn one day to take seriously our responsibility towards this planet.
