  1. I fully agreed, I didn't like his actions at the end of the movie and I felt like it undermined a lot of the important messages throughout the movie. I am from Texas but I didn't appreciate that part.

  2. I just saw it and would give it a 8.5 out of 10. I was really surprised how invested I was in the story. Then 2 things throw it off from being a nearly perfect movie. Both in the 3rd act. I think Novak just went a little too far in his flipping the script and made a little too big of a leap from the direction and tone of the movie at the end. Like I think one or the other would have been fine but not both events.

  3. Saw it last night & enjoyed it throughout, not the least of which was observing the many talents of BJ Novak after knowing him only from The Office series, that I watched in it's entirety over the winter. Loved Ashton Kutcher character. Shocked by then ending, but thought it was perfect 🙂

  4. SPOILER—- I saw the ending as Ben realizing he is kind of the same as Kutcher’s character (who turns out to be a terrible guy), so he got rid of the problem and went to change his view on life. I loved it.

  5. I think the ending meant to be a deadpan. For example, in the beginning Ben is all about these deep thoughts, and living in different times, and people making up theories to deal with loss. He saw Ashton Kutcher character as a reflection of himself where he thought he was wiser than people in Texas but instead saw that he was probably a jerk that look down on them. So he killed him and in turn changed his way of thinking too.

  6. warning– minor spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie and thought BJ Novak's writing and direction were very smart. I'm a Texan, and I definitely think this movie hits a little closer to the heart because of the satirical humor targeted at Texas, which was pretty on the nose!
The ending to me was Ben adopting "the texas way" and handling business without the cops (cause they "don't call 911 in texas" of course). Q described writers as people who watch and retell, but Ben grew and became the story instead of just the reporter. He even betrays his identity as a journalist by deleting those audio files. I also love that they played that Lana Del Rey song at the end because Ben makes a joke in act 1 about the Lana Del Rey type of American who romanticizes the American experience and then he becomes part of that narrative with his very dramatic, uncharacteristic actions at the end. I think there's a lot of social and political commentary to unpack as well..

  7. I’m glad so many people like this movie. I thought it was a vague and humorless attempt to dive into cross sections of the political, socio economic divides in this country. Seems like people think they are watching some kind of deep dive into these issues. It seems the ideas the film serves are self serving to the very pretentious ideas of the main character. You have not looked into a crystal ball that shows life in the Deep South! Get over yourself.

  8. My biggest complaint about this movie was Ashton Kutcher. Just not a fan of his acting and it felt like he was mis-cast. It was just super obvious in every scene he was in that I was just watching Ashton Kutcher read lines while wearing a cowboy hat. Not great

  9. I just watched this film and agree that the ending comes out of nowhere. I was surprised by it. Overall, I enjoyed the film and agree that the performances and humor were subtle, but the writing was very engaging. I was entertained.

  10. I absolutely loved everything about the movie. I never saw any dull moments. The entire film was brilliant and perhaps because I am a Southerner I thought the ending was perfect.

  11. I hated this movie!! This movie has everything I hate about left and right politics. This movie has hatred against Mexicans in this movie. I AM HALF MEXICAN!!

  12. I 100% agree about the ending. And it's a shame because I thought the ideas being presented were really interesting and they could have left the audience walking away with a much better and more thought-provoking conclusion, but really kind of squandered it.

  13. For me, the best comedy of the year so far is The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. I had so many laugh out loud moments while watching it…especially when Nicolas Cage was making jokes at his own expense! Brilliant!!

  14. I went to the Tribeca festival premiere of this. Got to see Novak and Rae and Cameron and Kutcher. Really enjoyed the film, and i liked the big energy it evoked in that audience.

  15. BJ Novak writing, directing, & starring, while also playing a writer in the film?!? Thats fantastic haha. Definitely gonna check this one out this weekend, esp with Ashton starring
