Thunderstorms caused significant rainfall in certain areas of Carinthia around Ossiacher See on Wednesday night; Central Carinthia was particularly hit. Rainfall totals of up to 150 liter per m2 were recorded, along with mudslides, localized floods, and occasionally the sounding of civil defense sirens. Numerous mudslides were caused by this obscene amount of rain, which also set off civil defense sirens. Most affected are the areas north of Villach (Gegendtal, Arriach, Treffen am Ossiacher See). Right now, the outside world is thought to be cut off from Arriach. Only a few hours after the strongest storm gust described, 121 liter per m2 were recorded there in 6 hours, which should be the second record in a short period of time. On Wednesday night, streams in the Villach-Land area broke their banks. Additionally, so-called mudflows in the mountains buried homes up to the first story. People apparently received a civil defense warning to stay indoors during meetings at Lake Ossiach and the climatic health resort of Arriach since it was unsafe to be outside.
