Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24

Spread The Viralist

In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn’t as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we’re conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn’t a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers.

America’s Westward expansion was fueled by both Manifest Destiny and a desire to grow the nation and its resources — though at a cost: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/manifest-destiny
As Americans continued to stream West under the name of Manifest Destiny, American Indians saw their lives changed forever as they moved from practicing resistance to lives on reservations: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/from-resistance-to-reservations

  1. Great Video! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried – Caamyce Wordless Command (just google it)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learnig how to manifest your material goals minus the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.

  2. you shouldn't be using "Indian" as a term to call native Americans you should be using "Native Americans" or "Indigenous people"

  3. This history teacher is the kind of liberal one sided BS that goes on at college. He would say how horrible native Americans were treated in the trail of tears and leave out that the richest of the native Americans carried along slaves. What? Native Americans had slaves? Yes. So did free African Americans had slaves too. This guy and so many liberal professors leave this dark side of history out. Same time bashing white people.

  4. Instead of saying white people (kind of sounds racist) use the word emigrate. Plenty of blacks went west too. And other races during the manifest destiny.

  5. They should change the name to this to the tragic history of the native Americans. Never once did he he talk about how Native Americans killed plenty of innocent emigrants. Plenty of that went on but talk about that. Just a one sided view of this time period.

  6. Does anyone know 3 effects of the pioneers living west because that's on my test and I can't find ANYTHING haha but please someone help

  7. You mentioned Australia's policy of removing aboriginal children from families and placing them with white foster families which lasted until the 1970's but that happened in the US and Canada as well. They took children from their mothers in the hospital after they were born and put them in the foster system. That's what happened to my mom, who was born in 1967 and she ended up getting adopted by a white family. Her little brother, who was also adopted, was also taken in this way.
