Communists, Nationalists, and China's Revolutions: Crash Course World History #37

Spread The Viralist

In which John Green teaches you about China’s Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China’s 20th-century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People’s Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week’s Crash Course World History.

  1. People’s democratic dictatorship means a dictatorship of the proletariat (dictatorship = control) with Democratic characteristics mostly through the CCP

  2. The beginning is already biased with pride and prejudice. Adopting your tongue, I can say stop reading the naive AP high school history books, you should read Mao's red book to see what's really going on in there.

  3. last thing: it's not illegal to access YouTube. The site is blocked, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's illegal to circumvent that block.

  4. Also Mao agreed that the capitalist mode of production was required to develop China in light of what he called China's "economic backwardness"

  5. "it's hard to say that China today is a socialist state"
50% of the economy is state-owned, nearly all raw material production is state-owned, all land, telecommunications, and materials transport are state-owned, and production is determined according to a 5-year plan. Their policy is "control the big, release the small"
China is absolutely a socialist state and nobody who has looked at it objectively would say it was "hard to say" that. Are there contradictions in their socialism? Of course. Is there a lot of the capitalist mode of production? Yes. But are they still socialist? Also yes.

  6. It's weird how you don't point out that China averages one famine every other year for the past thousand years. The famine during the Great Leap Forward was the last famine in Chinese history. So you condemn them for the (pretty bad) famine but don't praise them for ending all famines thenceforth? Seems like you're falling into an orientalist viewpoint with that take.

  7. Whatching it in India on 31/05/2020. During the Corona Virus Lockdown. The Chinese Democratic Dictatorship has gifted Corona Virus to the world.

  8. You never mentioned the nationalists stood down 30 divisions of men at the insistence of the U.S. in an attempt to broker a peace agreement with the communists. This is why the nationalists lost the civil war.
