Perfect conditions at Pelican Point. Two rescues from the kayak are already done for the day and a third one is in progress. Katja has one of her rare non-office days and joins Antoine and Naude for the morning and scoops entangled seal #3 into the net. They remove a piece of braided fishing line from the seal’s neck and the animal is free to go. Luckily the seal was found early enough before the seal was impacted.

Katja
Well done Katja, good seeing you in the field.๐๐ฆญ๐๐ฆญ
Thank You!
Good catch, Kat! Lucky little girl is now free to grow and develop!
Without wanting to get too morbid or anything, what happens to the dead pups? Do the jackels and birds eventually take care of them? And if so, what effect does the algae bloom have further on down the food chain?
okay
Well done Katja on your first netting. I am so pleased that you and the team are doing the work that you do otherwise there would be even more dead pups. It is so sad that we are causing so much damage to the environment that we put these cute pups at risk.
Go, girrrrl!
I was seeing lots of dead seals around, what is the reason?
Nice netting, Katja!
Great job, Katja! I appreciate knowing about the algae bloom and consequent seal pup die-off. I had noticed more deceased pups than normal on the beach recently and wondered if that was the cause.
You folks at OCN are the best, you've forever changed the way I recycle.
You peoples are awesome equal to god
GOD BLESS YOU๐
I just love how nonchalantly Naude tells Katja to 'watch the sharp end' as she pulls the seal out by the rear flippers. ๐คฃ
Great work!!! Thank you!!! The die off is sad but I know it's part of the circle of life. I wanted to know what scavengers feed off of the die off. Jackals? Do the scavengers get to the dead pups before they decompose and smell bad?

This was such a great save. This is really a great human family that inspires us to help others.
I love their little grunts.
Hola que hermosa ella hace una labor maravillosa felicidades
How could a toxic algae bloom kill off the seals? Do they eat the algae? Or are the toxins concentrated in the seals' food? Or maybe some fish died from the algae bloom, and then seals ate those dead and rotten fish?
Thanks for mentioning the probable cause. It's so hard to see all the dead pups on the beach, and so weird to see the other seals just sitting and sleeping among them like they don't even notice!
Awesome job Katja..!!!

Naude's like whatever I'm a dad I'm doing this in a flannel shirt now . Great job guys.
Well done Katja love the grrr grrrr at release haha thank you guys Jeremy Downunder
Girl power
These seals must have this moment of rest to maintain their health. It must take time for them to dry and be able to sleep. Is it worth picking up a few at the expense of everyone's rest? Wouldn't that interfere with their performance and end up harming them? I really like your work, but I have this doubt that I think is plausible.
Bravo Katja!๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
Well done Katja, I think thatโs the first Iโve seen you go from start to finish on a rescue. Also thanks to Naude, great teacher ๐๐ผ๐ฅฐ

It's funny how they express their utter indignation as they flee once released after behaving very well behaved during the capture.
