Fleeing climate change — the real environmental disaster | DW Documentary

Spread The Viralist

How many millions of people will be forced to leave their homes by 2050? This documentary looks at the so-called hotspots of climate change in the Sahel zone, Indonesia and the Russian Tundra.

Lake Chad in the Sahel zone has already shrunk by 90 percent since the 1960s due to the increasing heat. About 40 million people will be forced to migrate to places where there is enough rainfall. Migration has always existed as a strategy to adapt to a changing environment. But the number of those forced to migrate solely because of climate change has increased dramatically since the 1990s. It is a double injustice: after becoming rich at the expense of the rest of the world, the industrialized countries are now polluting the atmosphere with their emissions and bringing a second misfortune to the inhabitants of the poorer regions. One of them is Mohammed Ibrahim: as Lake Chad got hotter and drier, he decided to go where the temperatures were less extreme and there was still a little water, trekking with his wife, children and 70 camels from Niger to Chad and then further south. The journey lasted several years and many members of his herd died of thirst. Now he and his family are living in a refugee camp: they only have seven camels left. Mohammed is one of many who have left their homelands in the Sahel – not because of conflict and crises, but because of the high temperatures. He’s a real climate refugee.

  1. What do you think of this idea: that all human beings move to Texas, where we could live with a population density like New York. Many areas could return to their original state. The cost of fossil fuels for the transport of people or goods would be drastically reduced. And much less electrical energy would be lost in the long power lines. All humanity concentrated in one place.

  2. The first people to die from Global Warming.

Putin is killing Ukrains for Europe and the US.

Biden cuts oil production. Europe and US finance the war for Putin.

    Everyone wins.

Oil prices are up, carbon is down, only a few Ukrains die.

Only the first Global Warming caused war, not the last.

  3. Without reliable and affordable clean energy alternatives this is unavoidable – I notice as a result of the Ukraine crisis Germany is scrambling to get its nuclear plants recommissioned. Wind, solar and batteries are not the long term solution. But like many similar documentaries the projected affects of warming are exaggerated or cherry picked. The iPCC quotes a range of scenarios but the video predictably highlights the most extreme but also very low probability. Sea levels are also a global matter. You cannot have sea level rises in Indonesia or Island nations which are not evident elsewhere. Its called gravity.

  4. Deforest the country and see how much rain would fall. Deforest the country and blame climate change. Defrost the country the major parts of the world where it was geographically designed to help the planet and yeah we have a whole lot of damn problems.
Natural disasters are uncontrolled events that not even Climate change could stop or limit.

  5. Yes but those who who
Claim to protect the invernoment are the ones that destroy it. The United Nations all false about it. They are the ones who send hazardous waste to Africa and the rest of the world. Propaganda as usual

  6. the most important medicine are contraceptives in the moment. The poorer a society is the more children they have who are suffering so badly.

  7. Well. It happened. And now it just happening again. And it actually was happening the whole period of time.
Its just that the whole world was busy with War. And they are still busy with war right now. So more people actually paying attention on war than everything else around them. So those divided countries?
Everyone have a reason to be where they are. Thats why the ecosystem is collapsing everywhere.

Who can stop human nowadays from not being where they are?

Thats why you see all the animals are dying because of human.

So those human trying to fight for the animal world.

    But. Really?

Do those "Scientist" in the lab making Nuke care about the "Ecosystem"? Or they care about the "Economy"?

So those U.S Army All around the world.

    O.M.G

Indonesian are not poor at all.

I met some very Rich one.

    Lolz

    They love Drugs too.

    Top Quality Shiet Aye.

  8. Climate change is a big threat to the whole universe. Here in Zambia, first rains used to start in September and end in April. Now, rains start in mid December and end in April.

  9. Climate change dosnt pay rent, who cares when everyone's rent is unbearable. You want more people to care abut climate PAY MY RENT. No? Yall gonna pay my bills? Yall gonna pay public transportation ticket? What is cliamate gonna do if my rent gose up? How dose climate solve homlessness? NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR THAT when rent is going up. NO ONE. Our bills and rent our priorty not some stupid climate.

  10. Increased Nationalism also seems a side effect to climate change, as if borders could keep climate change out. So many are suffering from the expected lifestyles of people far away. We have to change immigration policies and definitions

  11. There is no climate charge.
There are to many people on this planet.
Santaclaus swaap an Bill goates are werking on it with reducing it with the vaccins.

  12. Wonderful documentary indeed.bu t one thing that I keep on seeing is that these so call first world countries are hurting the earth in all their doings, and it's the countries called third world that're suffering from the messes of the first world nations,a lot of us know exactly what's going on,do people have to suffer so, especially black people, there's a question and and answer for everything that is happen on this earth, for my God said I will destroyed those who destroyed the earth, greedy men they're the problem of this earth, this is what it's.💯

  13. Hey. My hellezullaye honey. We're Kings and rulers you'res people's known me and my born and my life everything. Honey my heart is not a metal. Me also God presenting meat man. Still why drama come face to face. This chapter.

  14. Our political and corporate leaders are just paying lip service about dealing with climate change. What we need is urgent action to avoid global disaster.

  15. Who do we blame for the climate change today? The poor people or the super rich people who own big factories and high rise buildings and the super powers who like dropping nuclear weapons all over the world???!!!???!!! 🤔🤔🤔😠😠😠😡😡😡

  16. Floods ,floods everywhere and …droughts, droughts everywhere.!It's obvious that in both example we humans have to fix very simple equation – build infrastructure as very little is done in first place. And blame global warming is irresponsible. This scenario is blessing to humanity- water to blame is stupid. Harness it as Holland done and China is doing
