The federal government is committing $52.3 million of funding for Lifeline over the next four years from July.
The pre-election promise will see the national charity meet the growing level of demand for support services.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the funding is critical after several years of natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As a nation, during one of the biggest pressures and threats to people’s mental health in this country … we actually saw the rate of suicide in this country actually decline, and the people who did that are on the phone right now. They are the lifesavers,” he said.
Lifeline reported a 50 per cent increase in suicide-related calls in the 2022 financial year.

i think lifeline is christian based isnt it? we saw a move in the late 90s where niche based services got defunded and christian run groups took over the management, happened in HIV. That whole sector went from service delivery to counselling…and no one got help. Bunch of people got employed and data collection….not alot of service delivery. Lifeline provides a great service but i think we need outreach based follow up and housing and mental health outreach with no cops standing around with guns nearby…. Not phone chats about it. Maybe send the army in – they get all the money now.

would be great if you could actually talk to someone at lifeline who has some sincerity and interest in what they do.. you can rarely ever talk to a man there, they are all women and men's health line is even worse there is NO men counselors to talk to, they all sound like lesbians or feminists who'd be happy if a man committed suicide.. scomo you have no idea about mental health, it's near impossible to get any appointments with a bulk billing psychologist and if you do, you'll get 1x 30 min appointment per month or every 6-8 weeks..
They should also offer funding to Careline.
