Raccoons come back because they understand that there's constant food there. I have 3 raccoons and 4 possums and 20 cats that visit everyday because there's food available, not because they're "bonded" with me!

My old father feeds and loves raccoons in the city since 8 years. If you want to see how lovely free-run family members they are, watch the videos of James Blackwood the raccoon whisperer in Nova Scotia (Canada). 8 years ago one night my father was approached by a half blind mother raccoon with 2 pups with her. My father named her Fiffy whose family became our family – Fiffy had 7 pups over 4 years. Raccoons are intelligent and charming, most of them are friendly once we feed them. But some selfish animal haters chase raccoons away (mostly the condo owners do this) by stealing (removing) the oatmeal cookies my father puts down for them, and these people put glass shards to some spots where my father put down the cookies. One curator of a child's zoo wrote that Raccoons are charming and they should be the national symbol of America. I have to mention here that one of the pups of Fiffy was killed by a mean human by crushing his head. Sincerely, my family loves critter animals more then humans. Critters are nicer to us.

we used to have a 3 legged racoon that would come and visit us. one evening she brought her babies with her.
The racoons I've known have pretty well defined home territories. They wandsr about those territories and stay there for generations. Obviously most of the babies spread out to neighboring areas vacant of other racoons as they become adults but some stay with their parents. I knew generations of racoons growing up at my parents home. I actually wonder what hapoened to them after my mom died and we had to sell the house.

A baby raccoon literally came up to me and started climbing my legs at work one day. Sweetest little girl. Wished so hard I could keep her and would've had I been back home in WV but the wildlife rescue where I'm at is strong and effective across a broad range of wildlife that I knee I had to call them. An hour later she was taken in and 24 hours later sent to Key Largo to a dedicated raccoon rescue. She was named Ginger and put with other juveniles to learn how to be a raccoon for later release. I hope she's doing fine.
