In the islands of Kiribati, Central Pacific the village men who fished the ocean side of the coral atoll (ie., volcano w/40K ft drop-off) always carried a heavy 20" machete, landing a massive head blow to any shark that was being fished for, or otherwise threatened the days work in providing fish for the family. It was always a matter for confidence in skill over fear of the shark, or any ocean creature for that matter. FEAR of preditor meant one failed to account for the variables of wind, current, waves, creature beforehand. Therefore, getting married necessitated having all those skills intact before proposing to one's bride!
