5 Popular Pets That Are Threatened In The Wild
Spread The Viralist

The pet trade is a very controversial industry. When done responsibly it can lead to you having a new pet and a friend for life. When done irresponsibly it can not only harm the pets themselves but also wild populations. Some popular pets are actually endangered in the wild due to human factors and sometimes due to the pet trade. I will be going through just a few of these animals today as I will be going through 5 popular pets that are threatened or endangered in the wild.

For our first popular pet that is also threatened we will be heading to Sri Lanka as we have the cherry barb. The cherry barb is one of the most popular fish in the aquarium trade but is actually vulnerable to extinction in the wild.

For our next popular pet that is endangered we will be heading to New Caledonia as we have the crested gecko. The crested gecko is one of the largest gecko species but was once thought to be extinct in the wild. There are still small populations in the wild but the crested gecko is still at risk.

For our next threatened pet we will be heading to Mexico as we have the axolotl. The axolotl is one of the most popular amphibian pets in the world but there is only a very small population in the wild.

For our next pet that is endangered in the wild we will be heading to Africa as we have the African grey parrot. The African grey parrot is one of the most intelligent animals in the world and tends to be quite a demanding pet. Many African grey parrots are collected from the wild to supply the pet trade.

For our final popular pet that is endangered in the wild we will be heading to china as we have the white cloud mountain minnow. The white cloud mountain minnow is another very popular aquarium fish. The white cloud mountain minnow is endangered in the wild due to tourism and pollution.

If you know of any more popular pets that are endangered in the wild then let me know in the comments below?

  1. Please include the Dennison's barb/Red lined torpedo barb in your list of species that are popular in the pet trade but endangered in the wild in your next video

  2. Top 5 extinct in the wild animals? Animals that currently only exist in captivity. The extinct in the wild roach and blonde rubber ducky isopods come to mind first.

  3. The fish you mentions are very easy to breed and it’s highly doubtful that they’re catched in the wild for the fish trade. 99% of the species disappearing are due to loss of habitats and pollution.

  4. Why not introduce these critically endangered animals in areas where they could thrive but still be controlled by other native animals? The grey macaw could easily get an established population in the South American rain forest, the axolotl could have a recovering population in the clear rivers of Greece, the cherry barb could easily be repopulate in Cambodia or Laos, the crested geckos could literally be moved to any pacific island with trees, and the cloud minnow can be established in many freshwaters in the United States

  5. Chinese Alligator Lizards are a pretty well known lizard kept as a pet that is critically endangered. In general you can find a lot of reptiles that are popular pets but are endangered in the wild.

  6. It's sad that crested geckos are threatened in the wild, but at least they're thriving quite well in the pet trade. They're extremely easy to breed and make amazing pets.

  7. I trade features on a better exchange with less fee's. Speaking of FX trading, it's really one of the best business in the world right now, & I make money trading this Financial markets.

  8. Axolotls are a type of Tiger salamander, and through the use of iodine have been induced to complete the full metamorphosis into the adult form. This has no effect on their ability to regenerate lost limbs however as all Tiger Salamanders are known to have this ability.
