Two Seals Rescued from Extreme Fishing Line Cuts

Two Seals Rescued from Extreme Fishing Line Cuts
Spread The Viralist

As you well know, fishing line is one of the most common waste materials we find entangling our Cape Fur Seals at Pelican Point. Usually the line is thick and does not always cause major damage to the animals.
In this video Antoine and Naude capture 2 seals that are bound in thin fishing line. The problem with the thin line is that it cuts into the skin of the animals much quicker, causing immense pain and damage, often leading to death.
The first seal is a big female with only one loop of line around her neck. This line has been on her for so long that it has grown over in some places. There are knots in the line, so once cut, the rescuers could not simply pull it out. They tried from a few different angles but decided to let her go instead of causing more pain and potential damage.
The second rescue is a small pup that had multiple strands of thin line around his chest and also some through his mouth. The line was cutting into his lips and would also prevent him from being able to feed.
After release he hung around Antoine and Naude for a little while. We like to think it was his way of saying “thank you”.

  1. Damn, I don't think I've seen one before where a seal actually got away! I'm surprised they didn't tuck her front flippers in to stop her from getting power to lunge back to the water. They should've pulled her further away. Hope they can find her again to take the rest of the netting off!!

  2. You gotta be seriously strong & physically fit to wrestles these bigger seals… and run after them like that! If only the hurt seals would know they are trying to save them they wouldn’t be so scared…. It’s such a beautiful thing to see them set free and be able to heal from horrific human carelessness… really upsetting to see but to know people care warms my heart. ???

  3. Would it help if you guys were dressed in a fabric matching the color of the sand, perhaps with some horizontal patterns? The way you are dressed in dark colors makes the seals think you are some bigger seals or other animals about to attack. Perhaps you could do some experiments with various fabrics. One person dressed as you usually dress runs toward the group of seals and you time how long it takes for them to realize you are running toward them, and another person dressed in "sand camouflage" and you see if that makes it a little better. Perhaps some seal experts could give you some guidelines about what colors or patterns would be best.

  4. Whatching these older videos, it is SO impressive to see how much more experienced you are today and how much better the new nets work. The big one would not have escaped today.

  5. Wow, your job is even more dangerous when another seal tries to interfere. So amazing that you are willing to charge into the middle of all those moving masses!

  6. Sorry to say, but this Pup Was dumb. Not the catched one the other one. "I flee into this net." I wonder if it'l do the same when it sees a gigant jaw of a big white one 😉

  7. Did you ever go back and get the line out if the female? Whatever is in there looked horribly infected ???

Antoine…that was a great slide into home plate??

  8. Serious question: are seals a bit on the dumb side? Why didn’t the second seal just go left instead of barreling straight into the net and struggle to climb over it?

  9. After watching these videos, I cut up everything that I’m not able to recycle or re-use into even smaller bits than before so that they won’t do potential harm. Your videos are powerful. Every time I walk around and see packaging materials or anything that could tangle a marine animal, I try to either ask for it so I can dispose of it properly myself or ask people to dispose of it by cutting it up into small bits.

  10. Aww boys I know you made the right decision in letting the first seal go, I'm sure the line will work its way out in time, ? % dedicated, big love from Liverpool ??
