How they're handled is harsh but if solitary confinement it only for those breaking the prison RULES than it's fine. Even grown men have to learn to submit to authority. Humility is what makes a man, not pride and strength. If this was their life FOREVER I would be appalled, even if they murdered, tortured, raped etc. They need sunlight and some form of social interaction. Even if that's just a cell partner that's fine.
