  1. Many years ago I fed neighborhood stray cats that came to my yard. One night I saw what I thought was a funny looking cat. The other cats there sat far away from it. It took me a few minutes to realize that the funny looking cat was actually a possum.

  2. My mother use to feed stray cats outside in her yard, make little shelters for them , tnr them. Often you could enter her yard to find cats lined up eating out of bowls; cat, cat, cat, opossum, cat cat cat cat . One opossum apparently thought he belonged with the colony. He never bothered anyone or anything and sometimes would be laying on the park bench near some of the cats or in one of the shelters. So yes he earned a bowl in my mothers yard.

  3. Possums are awesome. No more bugs near that house. We have a baby possum that waits by the door for my dog to come out in the morning. He just sits there and hisses while my dog cleans him. Kind of cute

  4. Lovely story, I wish my cat would except the raccoon in the back yard. The raccoon seems friendly to me. Maybe it’s a territory thing with them.

  5. Possums and cats get along pretty well, they're about the same size. My cats didn't react negatively when a neighborhood possum would come on the porch or briefly take up residence in the crawl space (possums usually move every few days unless preparing to give birth).

I asked the vet if I should worry about a possum living in the crawl space. Would it be a danger to the cats? She said only if the cat dropped down in front of the possum and pretended to be dead. Possums are carrion eaters, which makes them very useful neighbors. If you have ever had a critter die in an inaccessible crawl space, you know exactly what I mean…. The pervasive odeur de death is gone in an instant once the possum arrives.

They are also rather clean and don't carry rabies or other nasty diseases that could affect humans or cats.

  6. Thanks for reminding me I've got to go out and feed the possum.

We have a lot of stray cats on their porch hanging out which I have since managed to capture and have neutered and keep in the house… when there was a litter of kittens just possum was coming over to eat and he would be fine as long as they weren't too too close to him. When he felt uncomfortable he would simply turn in hiss at the nearest Defender and they would back up about 3 or 4 in and just hang out. He pretty much trained them about distances and behaviors.

He still comes by and eats a little bit of dry food every night…
