My family never ‘got’ a cat.
A couple of them got us, though.
There was Air Vice Marshal Perkins (aka Perky) who was rescued as a kitten from between two concrete pillars by my father, shortly before a VIP visit from the actual human personage to our RAF base in the UK.
He brought him home in a shoe box and said “sorry”.
In four years, Perky never grew another inch in any direction. He was just a peripatetic slip of fur, and one day simply stopped coming home..
Then there was Nigel Lightfoot. I honestly can’t recall how he inherited us, but he was a giant among lions. He would molest Rottweilers for a Friday night’s entertainment, I shit you not.
When he was on his way out after a few short years because of a liver infection, and despite the pain he obviously felt, he still purred with pure feline bass as I stroked him.
I’ll never get a cat. But if one decides to take me on anyway, I’ll do my best to live up to the honour.
We’re inferior after all..
