And sabotaging other countries' pipeline simply allows Russia to hurt Europe more. The Russians could foresee that Europe wouldn't be buying their gas in the near future. By Russia sabotaging its own pipelines and other countries' pipelines, Putin can tell the Russian people a more convincing lie about why Russian went broke while simultaneously denying responsibility ("why would we sabotage our own pipelines?!") and making Europe's turn away from Russian gas very painful.
