I lived less than a mile away from the towers (West 4th St.) and heard the first plane go over my house. It sounded like a WWII bomber, whistling. Then I heard a faint rumble. I turned on the TV to see what was happening and ABC and NBC were just snow. The only station that came in was CBS because they broadcast from the Empire State Building, not the towers. That whole day was a nightmare. When I'd hear planes above, I'd get acute anxiety until I realized they were just F16's flying overhead. And then I stopped and thought, "Just F16's?! Over Manhattan?!" It was surreal. I went out on 6th Avenue to see the towers burning. There was a crowd of people, some crying, some screaming, some silent. It was like being in a movie. This happened on a Tuesday and on Friday, I went down there to see the site. The whole area smelled like an ashtray and there was a yellow-grayish film covering everything. Everything was still smoldering. I saw no one else down there but I saw the bones of the structure still vertical. It was very quiet. At work, that next week, with every phone call you'd ask, "Did you lose anyone?" or they would ask you the same. In the subway station, the walls were plastered with missing person posters–"Have you seen my dad?" Just hundreds of them. I had mild PTSD symptoms for a couple of weeks. I'll never forget that day.
