Suspect in Carjacking–Murder Killed in Shootout After Multi-City Pursuit in Orange County

Laguna Hills, California — A man wanted in connection with a carjacking and murder in Carlsbad was fatally shot early Saturday morning after opening fire on officers at the end of a high-speed pursuit, authorities said.

The incident began on September 20, 2025, at approximately 12:36 a.m., when Newport Beach police were notified that a license plate reader had detected a stolen vehicle linked to the earlier homicide. Around 12:55 a.m., officers in full uniform located the vehicle near East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive.

The driver and sole occupant, later identified as 31-year-old Andre Matijasevic of Rancho Santa Margarita, refused to stop, sparking a pursuit that headed southbound on the I-5 freeway. Officers requested backup, and an Irvine Police Department K-9 unit joined the chase.

The pursuit continued into Laguna Hills, where Matijasevic exited at El Toro Road and drove through a business complex before heading east toward Avenida de la Carlota. Moments before the intersection, he made a sudden left turn, stopped across multiple lanes of traffic, and immediately opened fire on officers with a handgun.

Officers returned fire as Matijasevic ran toward a nearby restaurant that was occupied by employees and patrons. He fell to the ground and continued shooting. After he stopped moving, officers approached with assistance from the K-9 unit, as he was still armed. Matijasevic, who had been struck multiple times, was disarmed and taken into custody.

Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Matijasevic was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the confrontation.
