There was something in the Bible that always puzzled me.
It says we are all sinners, even as babies.
For many years I couldn't find a way to convince myself that such a notion could be true.
How on Earth could an infant in a bassinet be sinning…and what kind of God would think so?
For me it was enough to disregard the Bible and anyone thumping it.
Many years later I was driving in my car and I turned on the radio.
I usually listened to CDs and never really fiddled with the radio but frankly I was tired of all my CDs. I'd heard them all 1,000 times.
The station happened to be on a gospel station.
As I'm about to change the station a minister on the program said he would be giving a sermon about how we are all born into sin.
Well now, I gotta hear this. What kind of malarkey is he about to spew I thought.
He began with saying that a baby cries when it wants something.
No matter the time, no matter what the parents have going on or how inconvenient it may be, it cries.
The baby has no concept of the world.
He went on to say, if we place a toddler in a room with a kitten, the toddler will almost always attempt to pick up the kitten by the tail.
This doesn't happen because the baby is evil.
This happens because the baby has no concept of hurt or pain.
It is unaware that picking up the kitten could cause injury, not to mention the kitten might lash out over it.
He said that this is the sin we are born into, an unawareness of the world and it is the sin that our parents are supposed to raise us out of.
With that said, my mind was blown.
I had been wrong to be so dismissive for many years but honestly it had never been explained to me that way.
He went on to say that many people are not raised out of that sin these days.
They go their whole lives trampling on everyone and everything without a thought for the pain and injury they are causing to other individuals.
I see a video like this and all I can do is think….yep.
