  2. Acre-feet? What kind of unholy way of measuring volume is this…
Can anyone actually comprehend how much volume that is? Is it a swimming pool?

  3. You could argue that there was cost cutting since the dam was built kind of sketch and im sure it was cheaper to dig a couple feet below the base clay than dig multiple solid beams or something like that down several dozen feet or atleast changed the design of the dam to that similar to the current design

  4. Luckily, the maintenance guy and the engineer witnessed the warning signs and sounded the alarm (and no white-collar "because I said so!"-dork intervened).

Otherwise, this would have ended gnarly…

  5. I guess my question would be for a structure like this why reinforced concrete wasn't used. You look at other similar dams used especially in hydro-electric power generation it's often reinforced concrete but no, they decided to use soil.

  6. The immediacy of water showing on top was an instant clock count down. I'm sure behind closed doors the discussion was held about that issue. The evacuation was executed solidly, amd that should have been solid, as they should have known that this was coming. The minimal amount in cost, considering this was the 90s, should have saud volumes

  7. Living downstream from dams or levees in an area guaranteed to flood should one or more fail is silly so I don't.
When you buy property don't stop at checking flood zone maps.

  8. Acre-feet of water is a term I've never heard. You don't even use the Imperial in the UK anymore, why would you put it in those terms?

  9. The engineers who approved the design & building of this…mushy turd of a damn were complete charlatans, with all the cerebral fortitude of generic cocktail sausages…

  10. Oh yeah, sure, just put a giant pile of loose dirt in front of a thousand tons of water with zero plants to root the dirt down and a twigs worth of concrete to hold the dam in place. Fucking morons design our entire society. At least they noticed it quickly and got everyone evacuated, that's lovely

  11. well, basically this is a case of people pissing off mother nature by trying to reroute a creek so that humans could have a lake for their recreational purposes. that water wasn't meant to be dammed. I wonder if they even did an environmental study before they built the lake.

when will humans learn that you can't piss off mother nature?

  12. I’ve been to the new lake they made. I’m from MS originally and we studied this in our state history class. The evacuation happening in time is because we’re so use to the Mississippi River flooding so we don’t play when it comes to flooding in my experience.

Also it’s Mississippi. In 2004, average house was worth less than 92,000. So that million settlement was pretty good in actuality

  13. Bentonite can form an effective water seal when it is prevented from migrating itself by something not too porous.
Commonly used in conjunction with fabric to seal ponds, canals etc.
However, it forms a goo, when aggitated in water, with a viscosity similar to wallpaper paste.

  14. Creators who cold read unfamiliar content slowly and very mildly insult viewers kinda.
Not like Plainly Difficult. With a name like that you could * literally anything.
