The footage revealed a unique perspective of the storm known as the stadium effect, which is when the wall of clouds around the eye resemble a sports stadium.

The hurricane is the strongest the island has faced since records began in 1851, and the world’s most powerful so far this year.

“An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft has found that Melissa is strengthening with maximum sustained winds of 180mph (290km/h),” the National Hurricane Center wrote in a post on X.

  1. These are not storm chasers, these are hurricane hunters hired by the national weather service. they fly those planes in and collect life saving information about the hurricane.
