Let’s unravel the high-stakes drama that unfolded inside Qing Dynasty succession conflict: Why did Kangxi’s plan to name a Crown Prince backfire twice? The Nine Princes’ War, the creation of the “Secret Succession Box” system, and why nothing could stop Empress Dowager Cixi.

I remember being quite fond of ATV's Secret Battle Of The Majesty, an older drama about the same topic.
Thanks!
Your way of storytelling is so captivating😍
Entitled a prince being crown prince is problematic because that prince is the target for everyone.
Aside from playing the long game, the 4th prince also had another ace on his sleeves. Which was his son, who became Emperor Qianlong. I read that he was Kangxi's favorite grandson and was even personally taught by Kangxi. The latter gave up on his sons and instead set his hopes up on Qianlong. Which was a good move since the Qing Dynasty's peak era was Qianlong.
This is actually Historical multiple drama 😂 scary but amazing
I know about Nine Princes War from Yongzheng Dynasty. Of course, the way the drama portrays about the story is different from the actual fact presented in this video.
I wish you used the last Qing Dynasty's movie, starred by Wang Anyu for reference. They all look much better. LOLS..Wang Anyu as the 13th prince. 🙂
omgggg是时候让外国的历史粉圈知道九子夺嫡有多iconic了😄 讲的很好,谢谢!
me just after awakening- Wait…i know these names.
Thank you so much for your videos. I don't have patience to watch all the movies. My sisters loves/obsessed with these historical movies. Yours is a summaries for history.
This was really interesting and even reminded me about "Palace turnovers", a political crisis happening in my country roughly at the same time :0 But now I would like to learn about Cixi and her reforms and ruling as Empress Dowager, since you mentioned her naming heirs that would be unable to undo the changes she implemented.
It appears (to me at least) that any inherited monarchical system finds its flaws when it comes to succession.
Even a clear-cut primogeniture can expose cracks in a dynasty. Look at the Japanese Imperial dynasty. Deprived of any cadet branches following WWII, it cannot look beyond its immediate family for candidates for the Chrysanthemum Throne. This has developed into a serious crisis. Emperor Naruhito has only a daughter, disqualified by law from inheriting the throne. His heir presumptive is his younger brother, Prince Fumihito. The Crown Prince’s son is Prince Hisahito (unmarried, 18).
I believe the British Royal Family has possibly the most reasonable system of succession, after having gone through 2 civil wars and a bout of republicanism. They have also been able to be adaptive as the times require. There is no Salic Law forbidding a female heir to the throne, nor is religion any restriction (although it remains Christianity due to being Head of The Church of England). This ensures no lack of candidates for St. Edward’s Chair.
Is there a reason why emperors started dying younger?? Seems like Han and Qing dynasties both had this experience (maybe others too??).
The middle children (5-7th) left out again. 😀
That was great!!!!
Great video as always!!! I always wanted to learn more about the Nine Princes War after watching Scarlet Heart and this video was perfect!!
Love your content!!! I have a huge gap in my knowledge for this sort of history and your videos are always such a concise and entertaining way to engage with the content
Cixi was the one who brought down China and lead to the hundred year humiliation.
Absolutely fascinating! The way this video breaks down the complex politics and rivalries of the Qing court makes it feel like a real-life Game of Thrones — but even more intense because it actually happened. Incredible storytelling!
Love tour videos so much. Please make videos about powerful women in Chinese history as well. I think we all are curious about these women 😊
I once read that one of the factors that made kangxi chose the 4th prince, was because he favored his grandson, the future Qianlong emperor. And Qianlong showed his filial piety by abdicating so not to rule longer than his grandfather kangxi
Yes Bu Bu Jing Xin!!!! Loved that drama!
Amy, will u marry me? Lol. Just kidding, great vid as always
Ðemocracy guarantees stable power change(%90)

Are there any members of the imperial family left today?
Love your videos!!! Ever thought of a counter factual video!!
And almost anytime a regent try’s to maintain power, it doesn’t go as expected 😢
I really love your videos and we need more people like you❤❤❤thanks Amimisu
If only Guangxi had his way, he might have prevented the fall of the Qing. But then again, his reforms are borderline suicidal in that he called for the total replacement of the Manchu advisory body with Han ministers, a constitutional monarchy modelled after Japan once again run by a Han majority, buying 21 modern battleships despite being largely cash strapped since their last war against Japan, and even selling off Mongolia and Xinjiang to the Russians just to fund his modernization drive, all the while genuinely believing that Britain and France will altruistically help China modernize without ulterior motives. No wonder why he was weeded out even by his loyal Han general the later short time tyrant Yuan Shikai.
This is what happens when you have sons from different women.
