Marseille, France is a city that doesn’t always have a good reputation – in fact many people know it as the most dangerous city in France (maybe in Europe) – but I’m going to show you a different side, from the amazing beauty to the incredible local food. This was one of the most delicious days I had in France.

Thank you to my friend Sophie Brissaud (https://www.instagram.com/sophie_brissaud/ Food and Wine Journalist, Author) for taking us around and for sharing her incredible knowledge of French gastronomy and history with us.

We’re starting this morning at Vieux-Port, the center of Marseille on the port. Every morning locals come to sell the fresh catch of the day straight from the Mediterranean. Unfortunately today was very windy, so there wasn’t as big of a catch as usual.

La Caravelle (https://maps.app.goo.gl/3d61g85iPscbNVJH9) – We then headed over to have a coffee with Ezekiel Zerah at one of the most historical cafes in Marseille.

Sur le Pouce (https://maps.app.goo.gl/j9i3YJcCJe72YcP7A) – Marseille has a large North African community, and you’ll find some of the best North African food outside of North Africa here, so I was very excited to try Tunisian couscous. Total price – €23 for everything

You also can’t miss the incredible sights and views of Marseille. From Cathédrale La Major to Notre-Dame de la Garde!

Chez Etienne (https://maps.app.goo.gl/gFnV5QpSuWDECcXX6) – Did you know Marseille is the pizza capital of France? And we’re going to one of the best pizza restaurants in Marseille to see how they serve pizza different from anywhere else in the world. Total price – €68 for 2 people

Restaurant Michel (https://maps.app.goo.gl/vzDh4AorrunmgAHi9) – If there’s one French food you have to eat in Marseille, it’s Bouillabaisse, a fisherman’s soup originating in and around Marseille, and at Restaurant Michel they’ve perfected their recipe for three generations. I’m not saying this lightly, it was a life-changing meal, and even Sophie said it’s by far the best bouillabaisse she’s ever had in France. Total price – €204 for 2 people

Marseille may be a little rough around the edges, but I found the people to be friendly and helpful with lots of characters, and the food to be some of the best in France.

  1. I love the fact that the pizzeria automatically serves half-and-half, because since I can't eat cheese, that's how we have to order pizzas at my place!😅

My introduction to bouillabaisse when I was a teenager, was through pictures of course, and then I had the opportunity to taste a really fabulous concoction done by a French chef in one of the major hotels in Singapore. And then in Los Angeles at the legendary, five star, Michelin award-winning Chasen's restaurant was where I had the other. It was phenomenally, wonderful delicious, memorable, and it was also fun to see Doris Day ordering the same thing at another table!
This bouillabaisse looks phenomenal! Just wow!

  4. Nice video, but the couscous isn't tunisian here. The tunisian couscous is only with fish. What the american call couscous is semolina , the couscous is the name of the entire dish. But as a frenchie, you do the good spots ^^

  5. No illegal migrants there, I guess. All being herded to the North of France to enter the UK on small boats thanks to the vile EU. We should never have participated in their liberation (WW2).

  6. Hi Mark, it was great to see you at our place and when you ate la bouillabaisse what a special moment !! It was sure you'll like it !! And as i always say : our pizzas are the best in the world, so unique !! When you ll come back in south, you got to eat : la soupe au pistou, les beignets de fleur de courgette (zucchini flower fritters), pan bagnat (Nice town amazing sandwich), la bourride, les artichauts à la bariguoule, les tielles, les légumes farcis, la ratatouille or bohemienne (a variation), la pissaladière, chichi fregi (amazing fritter), rousquille (biscuit), tarte tropezienne etc….
We re all fan of you in family, keep it up and take care 😉👌🏼

  7. Brilliant video, there is so much fabulous french food aside the well know boeuf bourguignon etc, and the southern mediteranean cooking is the best and shares so many similarities with Italian food.

  8. Hi Mark, Ying and Micha. Just saw some of your negative comments from other people. There are always haters and jealous people. Mark, I've been following you since 2020. Love all your posts and comments. Love your content. Supporting you. Blessings to you family and yourself. Cheers. Richard from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺

  9. Oh my goodness. Feel like hopping on a plane to go and eat Bouillabaisse in Marseille. Spectacular! Thanks Mark! Love watching all your videos. Avid fan. 👏👏

  10. Mark, I never get tired of watching you eating food that I will never get to enjoy. I love your passion describing the essence of what you're consuming. I can almost taste it!…. You're making me hungry dude!!!!

  11. I have watched every video you have produced and this is by far the best! I’m not French. I’m an eastern Kentucky old man of 74 years. This allows me to experience the world I would otherwise never know. Thanks so much Mark. You are greatly appreciated.

  12. Wow! I wish I could go there and try that bouillabaisse. That looked delicious. All the food looked good and the people at all the restaurants were absolutely lovely, but it's sad to see the old buildings covered in graffiti.
