Lyon is known as the food capital of France, and today we’ll be exploring some of the most legendary French food this amazing city has to offer, including eat at Paul Bocuse, often considered the king of French food, who influenced the entire culture of restaurants around the world. So is Lyon really the food capital of France?

Thank you to my friend Sophie Brissaud (https://www.instagram.com/sophie_brissaud/ Food and Wine Journalist, Author) for taking us around and for sharing her incredible knowledge of French gastronomy and history with us.

Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse – We’re on our Lyon tour at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a market where Paul Bocuse used to shop. You can buy every French ingredient you need here, and things tend to be gourmet and upscale, from Bresse chicken to cheese and oysters. We stopped at Le Fer à Cheval for a cafe.

Brasserie Georges – You can’t go to Lyon without eating at Brasserie Georges, a legendary beer hall and the biggest brasserie in France. I had the Gratinée au Madère (French onion soup Madeira style), Green Lentils Salad, Oeufs Mimosa, and not forgetting the infamous Veritable Andouillette – an intestines sausage that’s known to be one of the stinkiest foods in France. Total price – €149.20 for 4 people

Daniel et Denise Créqui – Another part of the complex French food cultures of Lyon are the Bouchon Lyonnais – which are family restaurants that preserve the traditions of regional French food in Lyon. They abide by certain rules and there’s even clubs dedicated to buchons. I tried the classic Tête de veau (calf’s head), and then Braised Beef Chuck with wine sauce for my main course. Total price – €192.00 for 3 people

Restaurant Paul Bocuse – Finally it is time for the meal of all meals – the king of French food – Restaurant Paul Bocuse. Unfortunately, no truffle soup due to the season, but I did try the Green and White Asparagus with three different sauces; Sauce Maltaise – Blood Orange Sauce, Sauce Mousseline – lemon, egg yolks, butter, cream, Sauce Beaujolaise – Red wine, butter, beef stock, which was absolutely magical. Then the famous Truffled Bresse Chicken PDO Cooked in a Bladder – Anthony Bourdain called a Bresse chicken the Rolls Royce of all chickens, and they are known to be some of the best chickens in the world. This dish was unbelievable, and served with morel sauce. Total price – €538.00 ($603.17) for 2 people (The chicken along cost 290 Euro ($324.75)

Lyon really is a French food paradise, for its food and restaurant culture, history, and the amount of legendary chefs from Lyon.

  2. Great to see you Mark enjoying Lyon ! You touched to most iconic places ! But one important thing to notice ( and I traveled a lot) but people from Lyon area are so connected with good fresh food that A LOT of restaurants are TOP quality there . An average one will not stay for long! ENJOY

  3. Before watching Mark's video I watched Guga going to the best steak house in NY. Those steaks were average at best and when you see what you're getting in France for the same money is blowing my mind

  4. I’m not into French food but I love their pastries. I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful organization and presentation of the food! It’s so impressive and I don’t like organ meat. I love how they make the food look glamorous too.

I enjoyed this video because I love history too. Thank you!

  5. A few years back we had a family trip to Lyon and were fortunate enough to have the Breese Chicken at Paul Bocuse's restaurant. It was unlike anything you've ever had. Funny story we initially thought the staff was a little stuffy and borderline arrogant. When the chicken was served my Aunt asked if she could have the sauce on the side. The server simply replied…"no you cannot" in a condescending matter….He then burst out laughing along with the rest of the table and we continued to have a great time and experience. It was just a memorable funny moment.

  6. Mark I literally told my family that I was waiting in anticipation for your French series imagining it'll be huge, and it seriously does not disappoint!!! Lyon really is the food capital!
