One of the most shocking mysteries in Qing Dynasty history: Why did Empress Nara, the second wife of Emperor Qianlong, get removed from most official historical records for cutting her hair? And why did she do it?

This is completely l opposite of the series on Prime that's on now. It says she was the loved one
I think she finally had enough and decided that she'd rather live in obscurity then being publicly disrespected
Ruyi was a great show. I joined RedBook app to find other fans but it seems Chinese netizens hate this show and the Zhou Xun.
Ruyi was sick of Qianlong he was such a headache
Damnn she's badass
I think Empress Nara/Ruyi had reached a breaking point with the Emperor. She was probably thinking âenough is enoughâ, so she cut her hair. Plus, back in ancient times, outspoken women were considered rude, scandalous, misbehaving and/or crazy. Then again, itâs not that different from now either.đ
I have watched this long drama series a couple of times. I feel that there were several events that contributed to Nara;s final decision to cut her hair> she simply was finally fed up and "DONE" with the emperor and his acts overall. The heartbreak for me was that they grew up together, I feel overall the emperor took her for granted in the drama several times and accused her of events that were not of her doing. In the end the emperor, cut his hair and placed it in the box with her cut hair before he died where Nara's cut hair was placed after she cut hers and feel this gesture exonerated Nara the day the emperor died as he realized his wrongs towards Nara and regretted it.
She initiated the separation from him and he couldnât stand it.
I've never seen this promo pic before, I love it.
Could you tell me if there was a specific name for the wavy rainbow pattern at the hem of the ladies' gowns? TIA
I love the story of empress Nala â€
Riyi sitting in the doorway is my favorite clip–seeing her wipe away tears when she realized the infighting & jealousy wasn't going to end–and her love didn't make a difference đ đą
Isn't Yongqi the son of Noble Consort Yu? His name is pronounced Yongji
The Anne Boleyn of China!
Thank you for making this vidâŠ.đ
To be driven to a point for Empress Nara to æć
Something big might have happened, for what actually happen we will never know
But to come to that point in her life where she as a ,Queen of a nation, a mother and a wife to someone since young, has to do such a drastic action in a world dominated by male rights and women are view as commodity; one would definitely have a reason for their action
Does she know if her action will spark an erasure of her from history? Probably
Maybe she did it due to jealousy? Most unlikely as she was already a women of the court since young
Vying for attention? She is already a Queen and if no harm comes to her son, her son will be very likely be the next to succeed the throne so what she did is basically a 'career suicide' but she still did it
Then why? It could be she uncovered something that challenged her values in life, something she is unable to stomach or tolerate that led her to basically remove herself from whatever BS could be occurring
You would have easily become a consort to the emperor with your natural beauty
Wasn't Yongqi the son of Consort Yu? And my understanding is that Yongqi was highly favored, but he died rather young of tuberculosis. Or else Wikipedia is lying to me, which is entirely possible.
Honestly sounds like Quianlong loves the first Empress and Empress Ulanara could never measure up to her in his eyes then a newer woman with no baggage came a long while Empress Ulanara was left as a scapegoat. Qianlong sounds like a heart broken person but took out his sadness and frustrations out on Empress Ulanara. In his eyes on the first empress was his one and only which is incredibly sweet but so sad for everyone else. I read somewhere that he did eventually love Empress Nara but she fell out of favor eventually. The fact that Qianlong took such great lengths to erase her shows how much he hated her and didnât want his first Empress his main wife to be have any predecessors till Ling. I believe he only posthumously promoted Ling to legitimize her son and not Empress Naras son. This could be a real sign of affection Qianlong had for Ling but he could never give her the position of Empress for w.e. Still think that spot was too precious to him. So sad all around and his efforts to erase Empress Nara backfired horribly. Since most believe in Karma Qianlong must have done something đ because now you have millions of people curious about Empress Nara over his beloved first empress/wife.
Omg please please do Ling Huang Guifei next!!
I think she was simply upset to see all the others getting more affection, attention and respect even those were lower ranked…I would acted the same way telling my husband he can f* off and can look for another "idiot" doing my job …
I mean…if the weather there is anything like Florida…she probably got tired of the constant heat rashes on the back of her neck…
Kidding…it was probably to show them that she could act just as crazy as they were trying to make her out to be.
I freaking LOVEEEE your hairstyles and clothing when you film your videos!!!!!â€â€â€â€â€
look, i dont comment much but PLEASE do a video on consort Ling! Yanxi Palace is the show that got me hooked on chinese history!
The one thing I still kind of don't fully understand… when men shave the top half of their hair is still cutting their hair. So why is it OK for men but not for women?
My guess is that she was bitching around like castrating maids, forcing abortions, scheming around and other classical evil powerhungry consort things she would do to gain the emperor's attention and achive ultate control trying to manipulate the emperor. In the beggining he believed her but then he found out and angrily banished her
I love your channel, youâre like a modern day historian griot.
I just rewatched the drama the princess weiyoung for like the 100th time itâs one of my favorite dramas and was wondering if you you can do a video covering the northern Wei dynasty and emperor wengchen and empress dowager feng
It wasn't about the Emperor going after other females. More about the Emperor jailing Naras family members like father and brother. She felt useless she couldn't save her family members as a empress
I think given the severity of deposing an empress and the fact that there was a legitimate heir, I would had to be something extremely serious. While Ruyi is a great show, I think simply an argument wouldn't have been enough for that risk. I think that it was probably closer to rebellion or court tampering. If the argument was all that had taken place, she could still be confined in the palace, told everyone she was recovering her health or bs and her die in peace. But the fact that qianlong even punished a minister in court to become a slave over this indicates that there had to be a large reason for something like this. While she wasn't formally deposed, it was very public that her seal had been taken and Ling was Imperial Noble Consort.
Of course Qianlong called her crazy. I'm glad you pointed out how historically women were called mad if she did anything against the norm. It sounds to me like she did it because she was just done with everything. Life as Empress is exhausting and she would have had to deal not just with managing the multiple personalities in the harem, but Qianlong's fickle affections and her predecessors legacy.
Your new category of videos is quite interesting. Possible topics could be:
– the strange death of the first Chinese emperor and its consequences
– how could Wu Zetian escape the monastery and come back to the palace?
would love a video based on the yanxi palace character weiyingluo or consort ling!
Did any consorts ever marry a foreigner?
Yes pls do ling gui fei
Yanxi palace was amazing, I can't say I enjoyed Ruyi as it just didn't have the same humour Yanxi Palace had.
Empress Nara and Qianlong most likely had an argument while on the boat, which inevitably most likely led the Empress saying "f*ck you." Qianlong spending that much effort, and silencing anyone that spoke up for her, suggests that he is mot likely to blame for her reaction. Narcissists react in the same way. If they can't win, then they will make sure that you will always lose. That everyone will see you as a loser, as the perpetrator, not the victim. They will snuff out any hope for the truth, because the truth means their defeat, and Narcissists are unable to cope with being defeated.
The records about the food portions being drastically cut in a single day probably means that Empress snapped. They could have had a meal together, maybe at lunch, and that's when the argument ensued? If I remember correctly , the portions of food in the evening were so, so much less than what she received in the morning/noon. I think analyzing Qianlong's itinerary for the day could help identify just what might have set them off.
the most beautiful AI â€
So sad for her this empress and her unt
Crazy idea i know…but…could she have been forced to, by another? To save her son?
It must have been horrible in the harem.
I do like the idea that she had had enough and chose to do it, as a moral high, ground though.
I believe she just got tired of being disrespected, and something really messed up must have happened that triggered her to cut ties with him. She's an ICON!!!
It is mysteries like this that make me wish we had figured out time travel. I'd be okay with being ghost-like in time travel, unable to interact or affect things, but able to witness the truth.
