  1. I remember as a teenager seeing a twisting rope go overhead rolling ahead of a thunderstorm. We heard a small plane trapped inside being tumbled over and over with many throttle changes. My father said "that man's fighting for his life!" About 5 miles further on he lost the fight and crashed killing him. I read a book by Martin Caidin a test pilot who was flying his family in a twin engine plane that was rated for aerobatics. He was in perfectly clear air and was tumbled over and over in a similar fashion across over 100 miles. He was fighting for dear life and people on the ground saw and heard it tumbling overhead. He had a harness on but the passengers were severly injured mostly by an unrestrained bycycle in the aircraft. After landing he couldn't let go of the yoke and no one could pry his fingers off it until they had given him alot of whiskey! He began to investigate other accounts of the phenomenon and personally went looking for it again. He found rare but similar phenomenon and coined the term "neutercane" to describe severe clear air mainly horizontal tornadoes that because they do not contain moisture or debris cannot be seen or detected by radar. As a pilot you learn there's strange stuff up there! Like a spinning cornstalk levitating at 5,000ft.
