The Philippines is an incredible archipelagic country consisting of some of the most awe inspiring mountain views, tropical rainforests, and sandy beaches. It also happens to be the most vulnerable country in the world when it comes to natural disasters, as highlighted by the World Risk Index Report in 2023. So what makes this country in particular so vulnerable? Well, as usual, it all comes back to the physical and human geography of the country.

But while the Philippines is very vulnerable, the reality is that south, east and southeast Asia is the most natural disaster-prone regions of the entire world. Which is unfortunate because it’s also home to over half the world’s population.

  1. 11:17 Kuala Lumpur (and nearby Singapore) are actually in a natural-disaster "oasis". They are protected from tsunamis by Sumatra, too close to the equator to have regular typhoons, and far enough from plate boundaries to not get much earthquakes. Also less extreme heat due to the lack of a dry season, and of course no extreme cold. It's no coincidence Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Borneo have the greatest biodiversity in Southeast Asia, because they are protected from natural disasters.

IDK, while I get your point about the Philippines, the idea that Asia as a whole is more natural-disaster prone sounds like a weak argument when you're talking simply such a vast continent, with such a wide range of geologic and climactic conditions. You could argue proportional to its size and geographic extent, Australia is even more natural disaster prone.

  2. I won't forget when Taal volcano erupted before the COVID lockdown. We live inside the 10km danger zone and our whole town looked like a ghost town because of all the ashfall just the next morning the volcano erupted. Then came the COVID lockdown like we didn't deserve to catch a break. 😂💀

  3. There's a city called Makati City that won't suspend their class because according to the Mayor their drainage is good. This has led to college students living in other cities to brave floods just to attend class (Pre-pandemic era based on my experience). Now they can just go online.

  4. ph is trshh it suucks and also they only survive cuz their gov wants them to suffer more LOL if only they let other countries take over LOL it would solve everything

  5. Earthquakes that go up3 to 7.0 magnitude
    Mostly Strongest Typhoons
    Volcanic eruption
    Severe Floods

If you are curious, this is mostly normal to Filipinos and this is YEARLY 😂
