15 MOST Powerful Hurricanes in History

Spread The Viralist

Tropical Cyclones are some of the most powerful natural events that take place on our planet… with powerful winds, torrential rain, and a number of unusual weather phenomena. They form over oceans, and can happen anywhere in the world when the right conditions develop… but it’s when they occur in the Atlantic Ocean or the northeastern Pacific that they become known as Hurricanes when they reach a certain intensity. These storms have battered the islands in their path and the coastline of the Americas for as long as records have been kept. Join us for today’s video, as we take a look at the 15 most powerful hurricanes in history!

  1. Have you ever been in a Hurricane? Let us know in the comments. I used to live in New York and got hit by a cat 1 hurricane and it was crazy! Can't imagine a cat 4 or 5!

  2. Bah!!! Try Typhoons. Super Typhoon Tip 1979. Largest tropical cyclone (Typhoon, hurricane, or whatever you want) ever recorded. It was 1300 miles across with its clouds extending from Guam to the Philippines, and from the Equator to Japan. It had the lowest recorded sea level pressure (870mb-equivalent to the top of a 4,000' mountain) and the highest recorded 1-minute wind speed-190G251mph. Tropical Cyclone Olivia a category 4 cyclone (1996) managed to pull off a 254 mph gust. Western Pacific typhoons and cyclones put Atlantic hurricanes to shame, and there are a lot more of the. The typhoon season is year round and typically there are more than 26 typhoons a year. The first typhoon of the year doesn't begin with the letter A, it starts with whatever letter is next from the previous year. There are 6 lists are worked through. When I was in the Navy in the pacific there was one year with over 30. A 20 named storm in the Atlantic is considered busy. A 26 named storm in the northwest pacific is considered normal.

  3. Andrew 1992 Hugo 1989 Michael 2018 Ian 2022 Laura 2020 Ida 2021 Inki hawaii 1992 Frederic 1979
    Georges 1998 Felix 2007 Dean 2007 Ike 2008 New England 1932 Galvaston 1900

  4. Katrina should be higher on this list. So much damage, displaced and killed so many. I know this is a power ranking, but the results alone were insane and disastrous.

  5. I vacation down in Southeast Florida, and we got hit by Katrina as it came through in August 2005. That did a number on our area and caused a bit of damage. But then we found out what happened with Wilma later that year. Even though it made landfall on the Gulf side of the state, it did more damage on the Atlantic side than we'd seen since Andrew. When we went back in August 2006, there were still a not-insignificant number of buildings that still had damage from Wilma almost a year earlier.

  6. My friend you missed hurricane Andrew in 1990 that destroyed the Florida keys, and devastated Miami. Other than the Labor Day Hurricane, there’s no other hurricane like Andrew. South Florida born and raised.

  7. We spent the last 20 years going (whenever possible) to St. JOHN in the USVI, where we stayed in the old Rockefeller sugar mill estate right on the beach. It was beyond belief! They had no phones, TVs or radios and everything was just nature sounds or people quietly laughing or talking. It's insane how destructive constant noise is. A few years ago, a giant hurricane hit the island and scoured every inch of it down to rock. Wiped out every single thing.
Broke our hearts, since we won't live to see it come back to its former state. I started researching hurricanes and found that the Virgin islands are in a big volcanic area and have serious earthquakes, and as far back as the first records by trading ships, hurricanes have scrubbed the island clean about every 50 to 75 years. I think it was about 70 years since a destructive big one had hit. I found that sailors learned from experience how to recognize the signs of hurricanes and get out of their way if possible…
