The Sakurajima volcano erupts in southwestern Japan, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to raise the volcano alert to the highest Level 5.
The Sakurajima volcano erupted in southwestern Japan shortly after 8 p.m. on July 24.
That prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to raise the volcano alert for Sakurajima to the highest Level 5 for the first time.
Agency officials said the explosive eruption caused volcanic rocks to fly as far as 2.5 kilometers from a crater.
The alert level for Sakurajima had been 3 before the eruption.
Level 5 requires the evacuation of residents in dangerous zones in Kagoshima.
Agency officials said they observed tiny crustal movements that indicate swelling of the mountain from July 18.
But they said the eruption did not eliminate the swelling.
Officials do not envision a major eruption to occur anytime soon but warned that volcanic activities could send rocks flying within a 3-kilometer radius from the craters.
