(warning: distressing) Sea lions off the coast of Argentina, Peru, and elsewhere in South America are increasingly getting trapped in ocean pollution. The org Mundo Marino Foundation Rescue Center is working to save sea lions affected by fishing nets and plastic waste.
‘In some way, if human actions such as resource extraction and the continuous resources exploitation aren’t handled in an appropriate context, they end up affecting the marine wildlife, and in the long term, as has already been seen, it will end up affecting us,’ says the org’s leader, biologist Sergio Rodriguez Heredia. ‘Animals are indicators, they are sentinels of environmental health, and they are indicating all these alterations that sooner or later will come back to us.’
