From hype, to alpha, beta, launch, and then, slow death, what happened to New World?
Join me for a week by week, sometimes day by day look at the major events which affected Amazon’s MMO New World, and see how we arrived at the sorry state it’s currently in.
Thank you to the supporters on Patreon and Twitch who keep the channel going.

There is so much delicious irony in Amazon creating a game with too many taxes.
i rly loved the game until i reached max lvl and realised there was nothing left to do just grind so i got bored and left maybe ill revisit it in a year or so
I was curious about this game and I want to thank you for the extensive video about it.
It confirms my suspicion that the decisions made at AGS are performed by monkeys with something wedged between the brain halves.
I was enjoying Lost Ark (also developed by AGS) and one day these geniuses banned EVERYONE using a VPN in order to fight off bots in the game.
It took less than a day and the hackers found a way around it, leaving the game literally unplayable for those of us who need VPN for one reason or the other.
AGS just joined Sony in my shitlist.
That game was dead the second it was proven it was nuking gpu's
The most visual warning of a bad mmo here is- not a hint of a swimming animation- yet the shop has tons of emotes to buy.
Take lessons from Ultima Online
I joined after free trial weekend my thoughts?~ PVE content- strong lore presence- lack of LFG and solo content…pretty much what any mmo should have?
22,625 daily peak player count as of May 14th 2022 they had so many servers when numbers were higher so i have to think they have done several huge server migrations (combining servers)
how is this possible , like wtf
A beautiful documentary about why listening to overinlflated game management's ideas that QA departments aren't critical and a waste of money because they don't make grand sweeping visually pleasing contributions to the product is fucking stupid.
(yes this is a serious cancer in the larger industry right now)
i love how josh keep stating the real problem "The game still has no swimming animations" that killed me so much lmao.
NOTE: writing this after i wrote the review. i am tired and this is kind of all over the place so sorry if its confusing at times.
I remember sitting through all of these bugs up until shortly after the void gauntlets released. there was a time where the fire staff and ice gauntlet where really powerful, but not broken like the hatchet was. but they updated both weapons, changing multiple skills, passive and active effects, and changing around the skill tree. so many changes were made to the 2 weapons that i no longer even knew what i was actually doing with them and my armor sets with passive buffs for those weapons that i took time to grind for or buy (i did not dupe gold so i didnt have much) were useless to me. even then that wasn't my biggest pet peeve. i would have been okay with relearning the abilities of my weapons but to me this was the final straw that the developers did not know how to balance the game.
by changing so many aspects of two weapons that are meant to be used together the developers will have no way to know what should and should not have been changed at the same time they would buff other weapons creating a massive power difference between the two types of players. if i remember correctly, they nerfed the fire staffs damage output, and the ice staff stun duration and proc times. this meant if i wound up in melee combat in pvp i stood next to no chance. to add to this the void gauntlet (a magic melee weapon focused on life steal and debuffs had no resistance to stunlocks making it useless against other melee weapons)
its the same thing that turned me away from destiny 1 after 4+ years of playing it religiously, in destiny 1 they would buff weapons and nerf other weapons at the same time, eventually leading into the mida multitool meta, i continued to play on the xbox 360 until new content was no longer released on the 360, this was because destiny had very good endgame pve content and pve rewards. but another issue these 2 games had in common was rng endgame rewards, in destiny 1 the taken king raid drops were not guaranteed to be max level like they always had been, you were also not guaranteed to get what item you need and if you get the item it wont be max level, this raid can only be done once a week. even with completing the raid every week until i stopped playing, i never reached max light level after The taken kind was released due to RNG.
new world had a similar issue but with watermarks, but even worse because endgame raid gear in new world is useless and random and is not so different from anything else you would find, i leveled armor smithing to 200 but had no better luck there, even with 200 armorsmithing, you need full set of armorers gear which is obtained via rng. you need the highest tier of materials which are very hard to obtain and can only be crafted 10 times per day. you need to make a armorers trophy, which the components for are obtained via rng and a level 200 furniture crafter if you want the best trophy, and other buffs such as food buffs and town buffs that are out of the crafters control. even with all those buffs active you can not create gear at max level. if you are lucky it will be max level. but you also cannot guarantee skill and affinities at the same time, if you want to guarantee intelligence, you get random and most likely useless passive buffs, and if you guarantee a passive skill buff, then you might get a strength role as a caster which is also very useless. The amount of RNG in armor and weapon crafting is game breaking for crafters.
TLDR: The Weapon changes were rampant making accurate patches and changes impossible. RNG was rampant in crafting making it useless. Endgame rewards and legendary items were just reskins and are no different from other items. Economy was destroyed. and there is no rewarding endgame for pve
The fundamental flaw in NW aside from management has been their refusal to learn from the past.
A twenty year history of mistakes, failures, recoveries, and successes seems to have been completely ignored.
What is being ignored is the management role of John Smedly. He is personally responsible for destroying an early mmo in one patch.
The man has damaged or destroyed every game he has managed.
He was running an unsuccessful mobile game developer at the time Amazon hired him.
It's been claimed he has had nothing to do with development. Thus inspite of his son being hired to oversee NW development in its early stages.
It seems that he brought with him many of the mobile developers in his company.
Anecdotally there are a few players claiming to have had an online discussion in which a few younger developers claimed issues with the person managing the game.
The players said these developers claimed this manager was still bitter over something to do with the original Everquest.
Smedly's one claim to success is being a major developer in the development of Everquest.
The more you look the worse it seems to get.
They will be no game like Lineage2, WOW, Tera again I guess. The people that are making the games, are focusing in wrong stuff
I really do love that it was just what I always expected and why I never put any time into it after checking it out. Chef's kiss
This game sounds like a soulless empty husk desperately clinging to whatever inch of life it can grasp. I wonder why any would ever have high hopes for Amazon making a video game or doing anything beyond what they are primarily known for.
I grinded through the Beta with my friends, but as soon as it launched I played it for like 20 minutes before uninstalling it, and haven't played it since
Before all you had to do was make a Mario or a pacman, must be near impossible to stand out in the indie game scene, I would have liked to see what they did leading a competent team instead of doing it all themselves
So this game is just like a battle royale but without time limit.
