National outrage and political backlash ensued after the tragic sinking of M.V. Sewol, which claimed the lives of more than three hundred passengers, most of whom were students on a school trip, five years ago. Yi Seung-jun’s film “In the Absence,” an Academy Award nominee for Best Short Subject Documentary, details the tragedy and aftermath.

An Oscar nomination documentary well deserved.
10:22 "We should have landed earlier and made a good scene". This is what a culture obsessed with "honor" does. All that matters is reputation and the power hierarchy.
What a sad tragedy…. RIP young souls…
Power corrupts, absolute power absolutely corrupts.. We need to clean house throughout the world, these leaders and politicians Care NOT for its people…
what! the captain left and the kids were still there?
The civilians had more drive and courage than the government who wanted to just report the situation which is truly telling
Its not a president’s fault
1:05 WOW, 15 April 2014… the 102th anniversary of Titanic sinking…
If you ask a Korean what they were doing when they saw and continued to observe the Sewol sinking, everyone can recall and answer–someone even made a video of such interviews on Youtube. This is why I can't help but be enraged at the politicians and people in question who claim they cannot recall and they do not know in order to avoid responsibility and act as if they did nothing wrong.
It absolutely sickens me that such corrupt human beings exist who would watch hundreds of people die for absolutely selfish reasons. Thank you to the production team for creating this film in order to inform the world of a preventable tragedy and urge everyone to seek answers. Congratulations on the Oscar nomination! I sincerely hope this wins the Oscars.
It's really heart breaking…and literally hurt a lot…today also this news brings tears and anger at same time…I wish those people suffer a lot nd what they did will haunt them till they die.
If they wouldn't ask them to stay in their cabin at least there was a chance to rescue more people
accident?
gross negligence?
Even sorrow remains at that time.
UPDATE: This documentary is currently nominated for an Oscar under the category of best documentary (short subject). Hopefully this nomination will help raise awareness for the fight that still continues on nearly six years after the disaster.
This was sad and disturbing I can’t believe they did that to the students and people on board the ship
