On April 26, 2016, Ukraine marked the sad 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster.

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe.

Moscow tried to hide the disaster for 2 days before finally admitting the accident. Evacuation began long before the accident was publicly known throughout the Union. Only on 28 April, after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from the Chernobyl Plant, did the Soviet Union publicly admit that an accident had occurred. At 21:02 that evening a 20-second announcement was read in the TV news program Vremya:

There has been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the nuclear reactors was damaged. The effects of the accident are being remedied. Assistance has been provided for any affected people. An investigative commission has been set up.
— Vremya, 28 April 1986 (21:00)
This was the entirety of the announcement of the accident.

The nearby city of Pripyat was not immediately evacuated. The townspeople went about their usual business, completely oblivious to what had just happened. By 11:00 on 27 April, buses had arrived in Pripyat to start the evacuation.

Thirty-one deaths are directly attributed to the accident, all among the reactor staff and emergency workers. An UNSCEAR report places the total confirmed deaths from radiation at 64 as of 2008. The Chernobyl Forum predicts the eventual death toll could reach 4,000 among those exposed to the highest levels of radiation (200,000 emergency workers, 116,000 evacuees and 270,000 residents of the most contaminated areas).

The soundtrack is “Ethnicolor 1” by Jean Michel Jarre.

  1. There's always some idiot on Chernobyl related vudeo that writes "HBO brought me here." Am I supposed to clap or admire you? Isn't that obvious enough that people will come here after the series rising popularity?

  2. Remembering everyone who lost their lives after this horrible disaster. And respect to those who gave their lives saving millions of people.

HBO really did an amazing job being this accurate

  3. Chernobyl is just one of a million things that the cancerous Kremlin has caused. The subhuman ways of Soviet Russia have caused enormous cost, and who ends up paying the price? Always the other people of Europe. The fucking European Bank for reconstruction pays hundreds of millions for the containment. What do the cancer people of the Kremlin do nowadays? Oh they just invade eastern Ukraine. Hey Russia, you are filth. Until you fucking idiots learn to make a normal country, the whole world hopes for your death. Soviet Cancer Must Stop.

  4. 15:04 …. actually… untrue. A reactor can explode. If the meltdown meets an abundant source of water. Such as it was almost the case at Chernobyl. If it hadn't been from those sacrifices, the pumps would never had been placed and this story could've had a much different ending. It's the only scenario that could make a reactor explode like an atomic bomb. Can't remember the yield but it was significant.

  5. So hmm you all are going to laugh nervously and say I need some mental help after you read this but JUST NOTE I AM 11 and I learned about Chernobyl from that Netflix series Mysterious earth or some shit but any wayyyyyy I wanted to move there. Like straight pack, my things leave The US and go there. ONLY BECAUSE of wolves and horses and animals. Soo my dad showed me the documentery and Im terrified of radiation….

sooooo ummmmm you can call some authorities now….

    heheh DONT PLEASE

  6. 3 reactors in full meltdown in Japan…nobody says a fucking word ……EVER….SHAME SHAME…they are dumping almost 1000 TONS A DAY OF HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATED WATER IN THE OCEAN EVERY DAY …..they are contAMINATING THE LaRGEST boDY OF WATER on THE PLANET….they dont know where the melted nuclear fuel is…. NOBODY SAYS A THING……EVER…..the situation is not under control…..shame shame

  7. I hate my life…. This reminds me of my family living in ukraine and there is war in Ukraine and none of them can escape…my grandma is old and she lives alone.
