40. Johnnie V expertly took advantage of the slow pace. You can tell he was holding up National Treasure early on in the race. Why make him run any faster than he needs to if no one is really going to challenge him at the front? Mage needed a fast pace to win given his closer style. That said, I was pretty convinced Mage winning the Derby was a bit of a fluke. Not a single one of the other horses was good enough to run in the derby and he still couldn’t beat them. Half of them had only ran in a single graded race before between the three of them. That was a pretty disappointing race for Mage.

41. Disappointing year with a disappointing favorite. No Triple Crown this year

42. I’ve picked 9 winners in the Derby since Winning Colors, and the last two triple crown winners, but I hadn’t had a winner like this in 5 years. The triple didn’t pay much but it felt good to finally win one. Thank you National Treasure.
