  1. Death of the author is the creators inability to define their work which to me as a creator heretical. A creator/author can be wrong from an outside perspective but that only means they failed in their effort to show or create what they truly meant.

James Gunn example showcases what happens when more than one hand is a part of a creation. Polkadot man may have existed to James as he stated but after edits and cuts that character clearly didn't represent that view of character on the screen.

  2. the hilarious thing about media these days is, they do fanbaiting.
they hijack the IP and put some poc characters, well knowing they break lore(the writers and virtue-inputs). in the end they degrade the IP and make everyone participating look like a fool while people knowing the IP reject everything.
they are simply too incompetent to write a good script after they aquired an IP for sequel/prequel transformation. one of the major reasons why adaptions of videogames fail hard.
only cyberpunk:edgerunners upgraded the IP with an actual good tv-adaption.

  3. Speaking to the dust conversation, rags says he will assume a naturalistic explanation until a magical explanation is provided. I would just like to point out that that is a ridiculous attitude to hold in a Tolkienian world. The universe was sung into being by gods and the evil monsters were born from discordant notes. The earth in the universe of Tolkien was literally flat until a god made it round. The only light used to come from two trees until the sun was made with magic.
Assuming that almost anything that happens in the world of Tolkien doesn't involve magic would be just as ridiculous as assuming that anything that happens in reality doesn't involve physics, and that goes double if that thing is a friggin song that shakes a mountain and detects the location of super ores.
I just had to point out how ridiculous that was.

  4. The intro is sand responding to a the vibration caused by a musical tone. It is probably to represent the song of the Ainur. There are carvings on the ceiling of Roslin Chapel which have the same design and can be turned into musical notes.

  5. Its hard to judge a mans brain after 10 hrs of efap but not sure what platoon trying achieve at the end there. There point was very simple regarding death of the author

  6. The difference between soft vs hard magic systems is whether there are clear rules for the system or not, not if the system somehow permeates the lore of the world. Usually this falls into explanations of the energy used, any magical alphabets, etc.

So, in general, if the magic user uses magic, the reader should be able to understand what is happening, why, and the potential costs of the magic.

In this sense, neither LotR nor HP is hard magic (though it's more of a spectrum, so one can be harder than the other). as "It's derived from the law of fire" doesn't explain how the magic *works*, only where it comes from. Same with the spells in HP.

In the end, soft magic can essentially be explained as "a wizard did it" and hard magic is more of a science. Putting an origin to "a wizard did it" doesn't necessarily make it hard.

  7. Jesus Rags, you're a dick sometimes. You argue semantics to make your point, but if someone does the same to you, you move to generalities because you don't want to be wrong, and will not accept someone else may have valid points.

  8. I can't believe that, in this day and age, a vain, elitist, white woman, just told a "lesser" woman of color "your virtue is your ancestors' loyalty to the elves (my people)"

  9. Me and my wife were discussing how Galadrial is always scowling and only smiling if she's trying to manipulate someone. Then the horse scene came and we both cracked up and were like "oh no no no continue not smiling please!"

  10. I don't think this definition of soft vs hard magic systems is very good. Maybe the concept itself is dumb and I'm mistaken.
I assumed hard magic is one where it's easy to define what magic can or can't do. Like I can invent a spell say WoW polymorph where you turn a living creature into a sheep for 30 seconds and anyone can say whether that magic is possible or impossible in that world using references.
Harry Potter and LOTR sound like they're both soft in that sense. There is no reference you can use to allow or deny my polymorph. Only criteria is that I need to be able to tie it to a god in LOTR.
Avatar the Last Airbender is harder in that sense. You have 4 elements to work with and each person can only use 1, unless they are the avatar. I can't reasonably tie my spell to any one of them.
EDIT: Meanwhile the argument from LP sounds like the difference between soft and hard is just whether or not you have a source for the magic. This means my magic is soft until I say a meteor crashed into the planet and filled it with energy anyone can use to manipulate reality around them, after which it becomes a hard system.
