Spread The Viralist

On Friday, the Southeast Valley in Arizona was covered by a tall wall of dust or haboob. Around six o’clock, the dust storm swept from Casa Grande towards Chandler and Gilbert…

  1. A haboob is technically a very specific type of dust storm where the dust is kicked up by the gust front of a thunderstorm. A haboob is actually the correct meteorological term for that specific type of dust storm. Other kinds of dust storms should not be called a haboob, because that’s incorrect.

  2. Yesterday’s was awesome! Was right in the middle of that in Queen Creek. Got some on video! Nothing as amazing as some of these, and my iPhone 13 Pro didn’t do the storm justice as it made it look more clear than it was in person, but I’d love to get to higher ground with a good camera setup/Drone and make some more videos! I’ve been wanting to for years now! I love monsoon season 😍

  4. Arizona native. Dust storms were common growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. When we lost power dad would go get a pizza and get out the camping lantern. Great fun and nothing new. Climate is always changing. We never called them haboobs! So annoying!

  5. 0% visibility is when it’s so bad you can’t open your eyes, if do it doesn’t do any good, usually just dust in the eyes and you need something to breathe through as well! Call it what you want!

  6. Towering cumulonimbus clouds with huge anvil features developing over the east and southeast valley are a telltale sign that a dust storm may be in the making. And this is especially true when the distant sky over the east valley desert floor turns a thick orange-copper color. That's a warning for me to get into the safety of my apartment because I don't want to breath that dust in as doing so can put you at risk of contracting valley fever.

  9. It is a dust storm, not a haboob. This isn't Saudi Arabia. Were I visiting Arabia, I would politely refer to this using the local vernacular, this is the U.S. so it's a dust storm or sand storm if you prefer. Since we have so many Americans of Latin descent, let's use the Spanish terminology, "tormenta de arena".
