A strange tornado-like storm is tearing apart Sydney, destroying dozens of homes – eyewitnesses say heart-rending screams were heard as trees fell to the ground. Massive gusts of wind that came out of nowhere in what fire chiefs call a “mini-cyclone” left a devastating trail in their wake, with homes destroyed and 20,000 people without power. NSW Police confirmed that strong winds combined with a lightning strike toppled a tree in Narrabin that crashed into the roof of a car while the three women were inside. Witnesses said they heard the screams of those trapped in the car but could do little to save them as debris rained down. One frightened resident filmed when a wind blew the roof off a nearby apartment building. Wild weather-ridden locals described it as “a tornado-like wind” that lasts only about five minutes. The New South Wales Fire and Rescue Service made similar claims, calling it a “mini hurricane.” But experts are still unsure what caused the devastating winds that left the devastation in their wake. “At this stage, we are still trying to analyze the direct dynamics of what happened,” said Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jordan Notara. None of the observation stations recorded anything that could classify destructive wind gusts. Notara said meteorologists couldn’t offer “tornado indicators at the moment.” Still, one possible cause is a weather phenomenon called a “microburst.” “A microburst is when a thunderstorm carries a strong wind from the clouds to the surface,” Notara explained. The downdraft can intensify the storm and cause massive damage. But until more scientific evidence is available, experts can’t be sure. Locals also report widespread power outages have affected 20,000 homes, with emergency workers responding immediately and providing assistance after receiving hundreds of calls for help. “Since 3:30 p.m., emergency services have received numerous reports of storm damage in the North Beaches area with trees and power lines in the suburbs from Mona Vale to Forestville,” New South Wales Police said. Of note, officers from the North Beaches Police Department, along with NSW EMS paramedics, NSW Fire Rescue, and a Westpac helicopter, responded to the call at Ocean Street, Narrabeen, following reports that a tree and power lines had fallen. Experts were left puzzling over what exactly caused the shocking thunderstorm.
“Right now, we don’t know the strength of the wind because the observation stations didn’t observe anything that could classify destructive gusts, but of course, as we have seen, the damage speaks for itself.” Police have warned that the area is still “dangerous” and that members of the public are advised to avoid the area, with thousands of people told to restrict movement until further notice. “To stay safe, you must treat all power lines as if they were alive,” they said. Another local filmed wild winds hitting coastal areas from his balcony and called it “the most violent storm I’ve ever seen.” “It was like a tornado because of the strong winds” “The power is out in the area, and many sirens are heard in the neighborhood. I hope everything is ok,” the Instagrammer said. While Narrabeen bore the brunt of the devastating storm, nearby suburbs, including Dee Wye and Cromer, also suffered significant damage. Social media has been flooded with fallen trees falling on houses and cars, and in one image, the roof of an apartment building is seen to have caved in. In bizarre scenes, lifeguards swam through crashing waves to retrieve a trampoline that had swept ashore from a nearby backyard.
