Sonic Origins – The Digital Foundry Tech Review – Good… But Should Have Been Great

Sonic Origins - The Digital Foundry Tech Review - Good... But Should Have Been Great
Spread The Viralist

On paper, this should have been the definitive collection of the classic Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic games. Built on Christian Whitehead’s Retro Engine, the technological underpinnings are there – but a whole host of technical problems and a general lack of polish contribute to a release that promises so much but falls at the last hurdle.

  1. I wasn't really expecting Sonic 3 Complete levels of customization but Origins has basically none whatsoever. You can't even choose which level layouts you want in case you prefer the harder Sonic 3 stages vs S3&K. For rebuilt ports there should have been far more options included than out of a fan made hack.

  2. What I want next, is a similar treatment given to the original Master System Sonic games, because bafflingly, there is no way of playing those games (lawfully) on modern machines.

For some reason SEGA only ever release the Mega Drive/Genesis versions over and over again.

Unfortunately; the only way to play them nowadays, is (illegally) through emulation, on either PC or a jailbroken console, unless you have hundreds of dollars to buy an original working Master System, plus all three games.

I just don’t understand it; it’s as if the executives at SEGA, have completely forgotten their existence.

  3. I thought I was the only one who noticed the CD soundtrack not looping like the 2011 version. I also ran across a glitch in Sonic 3 when playing Sandopolis Act 2 the grappling hooks that you scale down the stone columns are not always there.

  4. The missing music. The €40 price tag. The DLC. No Chaotix. Any of these are valid reason to skip this, but combined they are deal breakers. Will wait for a sale or just skip

  5. No offense but if you're using a gaming PC and purchased Origins then you have wasted your money. What so special about Origins anyway? That it has 6 minutes worth of cutscenes that you can watch on youtube? That it has museum mode with pictures that you can view on google images? Please. The only redeeming thing about Origins is Mission mode which is just side content that you can safely skip if you dont' feel like doing it. Every self respecting sonic fan already invested in Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic 3 A.I.R and Sonic CD Restored which together provide cheaper, and about as good of a Classic Sonic experience as Origins gives you.

  6. Wasnt gonna buy it anyways but knowing all of the Issues and the changed Musik in 3 as well… It is good to know. I have the PS3 Mega Drive Collection (?) anyways. So why bother with this one.

  7. Also, they shouldve included the Sonic 8-Bit games, as they are wholly different and in my opinion some of the best sonic games ever.

  8. I always hated the Carnival Night Zone song. That drop irritates me., but that's also the case with most music with drops like that. Funnily enough I think I prefer the original prototype song over any of the other versions of Carnival Night. I do like the Ice Cap prorotype song best out of the prototype versions but that original wil always be the best to me. What's funny to me is that I skipped Sonic 3 at the time of release o played Sonic & Knuckles first. In my eyes sit has the more consistent and better soundtrack and is a better game overall, which slightly less annoying level design (when levels have annoying pits or overly steep hills). The Zones in S&K are also far less derivative in my eyes with Angel Island, Marble Garden and Carnival Night feeling way too much like Sonic 1 or 2 levels. Hydrocity, Ice Cap nd Lunch Base are great though. I welcome the combined version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles but I'm disappointed they didn't do what Sonic Mega Collection did a decade earlier and give us the option to play the originals.

  9. It seems you got lucky with Sonic 3 & Knuckles playthrough, you missed a couple of big glitches. First not really a glitch but more of a quirk of the version of the Retro Engine used for Sonic 3&K. Sonic's top speed and acceleration are much, MUCH higher than in the original making Sonic go way faster than the level design expects making Sonic go faster than the camera something that happened on previous games in the series but was originally fixed on Sonic 3. This increase in speed comes from the engine being based on the one from Mania where Sonic in that game was much faster but the camera adjusted to it in that game and the level design took into account Sonic's increased speed. Sonic 3 on the other hand does not and you will have many times where you will go farther than originally intended or hit walls from ramps you should not be able to do so breaking the experience.

As for actual glitches well they both are centered with the Emeralds. The first one you might notice, and it could be a potentially game ending one is that sometimes for some reason your score count and more importantly your emerald count gets erased in a mysterious way. It might removed all your emeralds or most of em making you have to collect em all unless you quickly close the game and select continue on the menu to take you back before that error happens. If you dont do that then you will have to recollect the emeralds which might be impossible depending how far you are in the game. A good way to notice this happened is if your score is set to 0 after a boss, if you see that quit the game by actually closing it and start again.

Second glitch which might be helpful for speedruns is that when you first get in a Super Giant Ring (Rainbow) if you pause just when the screen turns white and hit restart you will be warped to Hidden Palace Zone skipping most of the S&K section of the game.

  10. Y'know if they had figured out the music rights issues for Sonic 3, I would've been fine with the higher price point, but…like what are we paying extra for? with the exception of Sonic 3 & Knuckles all of these versions of these games already existed.

This should have been the easiest win in the world, instead I see people saying "wait for it to get patched" all the way to "don't even bother" why is Sonic Team such a clown show?

  11. Very disappointed with the way they handled sonic 3 and knuckles I was happy to pay yhe price since I had all the original games but nostalgia came to bite me with this and also I came across a glitch in sonic 3 and lost all my emeralds mud run in lava reef videos on my channel of this happening very disappointed with Sega here

  12. So glad someone's finally talked about the ui problems in cd, no reason all it's options and features like the da garden shouldn't be alongside the first menu with the islands

  13. Can I point out how frustrating it is to play in the super forms in Sonic 3. The physics are all wrong compared to the original game and it’s way too hard to control. And there have been a number of times I expected to launch off a ramp and find myself stuck to the ground.
