Three mature Male Lions is going to be a handful for any animal, let alone an isolated Buffalo. With that said, I think it comes down to how hungry these Lions are. Maybe they are more aggressive when they are really hungry?
i wonder about horns.. most herbivore's horns cannot be used as spears since their are not aligned and curved in a way they could stab, but also the ones that could are never really used actively, for whatever reason.. i think i never watched a herbivore take a fighting stance and jerk his head, according to the form of his horns, repeatingly to stab the agressor.. maybe, i suppose, herbivores simply might be not aware of the possibility of doing so.. even more since they use their horns in male competition clinches within the species regularly, but never to stab, only to tangle or ram.. hummm
