Natural Disasters Caught on Camera February 21-23: Mt. Etna, Cyclone Emnati, Wildfire, Severe Storms

Italy:
Mount Etna erupted in a spectacular display on Monday February 21st sending a column of volcanic ash 12 kilometers into the air and creating an ash cloud over Sicily. The towering cloud, visible for kilometers, was the latest impressive show of Etna’s power this month. Mount Etna has the longest recorded history of eruptions out of every volcano on Earth, and erupts on average around 200 times per year since its first recorded eruption in 1500 BC, according to NASA’s Earth Observatory.

Madagascar:
Cyclone Emnati made landfall on Tuesday February 22 as a catagory 3 cyclone. The storm came onshore north of the southeastern district of Manakara bringing heavy rain and sustained winds of 137 kilometers per hour. Approximately 30,000 people were evacuated from the area where communities have been severely damaged by previous storms this month. Madagascar has been pummeled by deadly tropical cyclones this year with this being the 4th storm system to directly make landfall on the Island since January 20th.

Spain:
A wildfire has burned more than 400 hectares of land in Roses, Spain according to authorities. The state of Catalonia has suffered with a severe winter drought and this combined with strong winds have made the fire difficult to extinguish. The City Council of Roses has asked the neighbors not to leave their houses and not to go near the fire, and people who were spending the night in vans and caravans parked in the area have been evicted.

Indonesia:
Heavy rains that fell within a 24 hour period on February 22 led to a flash flood that caused water to overflow from rivers and waterways flooding residential areas and roads in Kupang City.

Brazil:
Approximately 70 mm of rain fell within 25 minutes in the city of Jaragua do Sul overwhelming the municipalities river and drainage systems and leading to flash flooding. the regional coordinator of Civil Defense, Osvaldo Gonçalves stated the drainage systems in place were not built to support the amount of rain that fell in such a short amount of time. Roadways were inundated by the flood waters and Around 10,000 customers were left without electricity.

Japan Sapporo Hokkaido:
Heavy snow hit northern Japan on Monday, disrupting air and railway traffic, with weather authorities warning of more blizzards in the forecast. The snowfall accumulation for Hokkaido Japan reached 70cm and windspeeds peaked at 126 kilometers per hour. Approximately 1000 trains were canceled along with 140 flights to and from New Chitose Airport.

England:
The last week has seen storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin cause problems across the country resulting in the flooding of approximately 400 properties.The River Severn peaked in the town on Wednesday afternoon but levels are expected to remain high for a prolonged period and a severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, is still in place.
