Disaster Nursing

Spread The Viralist

My aesthetic project is a digital story. Last week, my hometown of Point Pleasant, New Jersey was one of the areas hit by Hurricane Sandy. The images were heartbreaking and I started to think about what nurses have to go through to do their job in these situations. Many times we don’t see the work that nurses do during a disaster. In Sister Roach’s book Caring, The Human Mode of Being, she talks about nursing being a sacred relationship. When natural disasters strike such as in Hati and Japan, nurses must work in the worst conditions. As horrific as the environment may be, they try to preserve human dignity and enter into a intimate relationship with the victims, often without even speaking the same language. This speaks to the very nature of nursing. We can see from the images on the television that out of the ashes of despair come acts of kindness and love, as people come together to help others in need, often risking their own life to do so. This is dedicated to the spirit of human caring.
