Eighteen months in the making, and 1,400+ hours of research, writing, recording, AI-upscaling, animating, sourcing and editing later, the anticipated Part 3 of my cyberpunk documentary miniseries is here!

THE EVOLUTION OF CYBERPUNK covers novels, comics, animation, television, film, games, philosophy, hacking, VR, simulation theory and The Matrix phenomenon. Learn about the second trilogy from cyberpunk author William Gibson: Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrow’s Parties, and discover the brilliant satire and criticism of modern America in Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash.

Jack in to cyberspace with the origins of hacker culture, its impact on us during the advent of the internet, and how that informed our worldview of the information superhighway, and films such as The Net, Hackers and Johnny Mnemonic. What inspired us to invest so much into virtual reality, from the Virtual Boy, to injecting VR cameos into movies and shows like Serial Experiments Lain, Wild Palms, The Lawnmower Man, and others?

For the send-off, how did philosophy and existentialism surmount in such treasures as Philip K. Dicks novels and research, eXistenZ, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor, and most notably of all, The Matrix? In summary, we will try to answer the eternal question, “Are we living in a computer simulation?”.

  1. I appreciate how you placed the release of the movie Strange Days in its context, in the shadow of popular movies of the times… Though years later Strange Days is recognised as an underrated great film. It was popular afterwards in DVD, VOD, etc., though never scores super high nonetheless.

  2. I really like that your group tries to capture the cadence of the speakers that quotes are taken from. William Gibson's in particular is very similar to how he speaks. I thought that was cool. 🙂

  3. Brilliant video can’t wait for part 4. One miner nitpick when you mentioned Batman beyond which was a great cartoon you could have given the forgotten phantom 2040 a mention also especially considering Harlan Ellison worked on it.

  4. I like this documentary, but just as some advice for future essays: don't wait until the conclusion paragraphs to tell the essay. Much of this documentary is just listing things ad infinitum, and it loses its point pretty quick. Maybe instead of featuring so many things, you just pick apart commonalities in particular eras of cyberpunk and then use that to show off all of this great art and literature.

  5. Mate, as someone who's just started making content for my own channel, I have a newfound appreciation for well made videos such as these. My hat is off to you sir. This was such an interesting and informative watch! Please give us more parts!

  6. love this series, completely understand why you want to take a break from the series due to all the hours and effort put in in. Hope one day you make a part 4.

  7. Billy idol was actually supposed to play the liquid metal Terminator in T2 but he got into a motorcycle accident so he made the cyberpunk album instead. He was probably researching the cyberpunk culture for the movie originally. I've listened to the album and I actually love it. "Adam in Chains" is one of my favorite songs on the album

  8. First of all, Bravo for this amazing series.

I don’t know how it happened, maybe YouTube is reading my mind like some strange machine from one of these cyberpunk stories, but I was watching a documentary on one of my favorite artists Zdzislaw Beksinski while play around with some synths and was trying to invoke 1927 “Metropolis” vibes. I then thought to myself, “I wonder if anyone has done a documentary about cyberpunk,” and sure as shit part one of your doc came up as the very next video.

Thanks algorithm? Or thank you YouTube for reading my mind?

Lastly, are you familiar with the newish show Dorohedoro? It’s a kind of mix between fantasy and cyberpunk.

  9. A bit of constructive feedback that I think is warranted with the bar that the content itself sets and meets. This series now seems to have hit a point where, as in the case of the Matrix, you're getting some overlap with the different parts. I can see there being an increasing likelihood as more parts of the series are produced, of there being more crossovers happening. What I think would be really interesting, even if it goes into 6 hour long supercut territory, if at the end of everything, you took a look at it all and potentially did a director's cut version of it all, where perhaps some orders of things got changed and perhaps there were some minor changes in the dialogue. If this series were at a lower level of quality and execution I'd probably consider this feedback to be nitpicking, but with the bar you've set for yourself and have well and truly met, if not exceeded with the content you've produced, I consider it to be warranted in terms of it getting even closer to perfection.

  10. For YOU…the person who is reading this comment I wish you a lifetime of happiness, laughter, love, and prosperity! All is well! The Universe is providing! You are safe in this benevolent Universe! ❤

  11. YOU !,my good man. ARE INSANE ! 😀 😀 😀 (meant very positivly) Thanck you for the cyberpunk … episode 1-3 . VERY infomativ. L_O_V_E IT 😀

  12. neal stephenson is the man , i never read any of his novels but loved him at Lex podcast and ASU and World Science Festival talks

  13. Have you heard of Jacque Vallee? He has interesting speech on predictive fiction. He read a book about 9/11 ten years before it happened. Interesting that "Everything changes on 1911"
It's like that number rang so loudly throughout spacetime that it echoed into the past.

  14. We do, we literally do have "religion receptors" built into our brain or something…
That's because evolution dictates that if people are religious, they will seek out religious mates. Whatever genetic allele that contributes to faith will be carried through their descendants.

  15. "Marxism" here is described as an irrational theory equivalent to conspiracy theories (memetics)… at least by the words of the character Hiro. In real life, Marxism is taught in universities (sociology) not as some historical crazy notion one should know about, but as a rational analysis of some social issues. It that sense describing all of "Marxism" as just the result of memetics is just the fruit of neo-liberal era propaganda; I suspect from the author's education. Now, of course, if you mean Marxism as the social movement or quasi-religious movements, then I understand more, but they are called communism and socialism (although there are different socialists schools). I imagine some will react "accusing" me of being Marxist, which ironically is simply the polar equivalent of the radical left ideologies: *ideological/political "religion" versus another ideological/political "religion" (or brainwashing in some cases).* As in two sides of the same exaggerations and stupidity, or two extremes that wish to eliminate each other. I am calling the extremes and the propaganda stupid, not the moderate understanding of what they have to teach us about our reality. Sociologists learn the basic concepts of Marxism because it has roots in understanding real social conflicts (i.e. diverging interests between categories of people in societies and the lies we create to mask those diverging interests).

  16. Slightly off topic, but you mention "esports we enjoy today", which makes it sound popular or widespread… The number of people that view esports and participate has doubled or more, but I would not describe it as really popular, in the sense that how many "gamers" really like esports or follow it. Though the phenomenon of Twitch, or watching others play and hence similar in a sense, is surprisingly massive. Anyhow, I am an old gamer who hated Quake and esports. I recognize though that Quake is a pioneer to the first-person shooter games I sometimes play today.

  17. Me and my guy just sat through these, it's his aesthetic and I was so happy I could use this info to gain knowledge on something he loves. Thank you so much. It was so informative and helpful. Beautifully edited and immersive.

  18. I don't think I've seen a more comprehensive game/genre doc on YouTube or literally ever. What a trip. Can't believe this is available for free on YouTube. Thanks you have a new sub for sure
